I've got a great idea for a drug that could be very lucrative. As in, I want someone to make a pill that does something specific which I think could be achievable. I don't think the likes of Pfizer et al have a suggestions hotline do they?

yes, I know many such people.
Ideas for drugs are one thing. Formulae for drugs are quite another...

I know but the idea in this case is a really good one and should be easy to achieve based on what other drugs do.

My idea isn't 'a drug that cures aids' or anything stupid like that 🙂

you'd be better off aiming at a small biotech company. Most modern pharma products are ones found/created by biotechs and bought out...

Big pharmas aim to release one blockbuster a year. It costs billions.

At the very outside talk to a small biotech. Most are working on a specific area. Find one suitable to the treatment area you have the idea for.

Chances of you getting anywhere are incredibly small.

Can it make me experience this?

If so count me in . . .

My girlfriend used to work in Pharma, it takes years of research and development and money, to make a goer!

But hey ya never know.

You want to experience a red x? I'm sure STW is the best place for it...

It ocurred to me the other day that a great tool to help weight loss would be a pill that makes you feel like you've just eaten a cake, or chocolate or something. You know often you're not hungry but you really fancy that desert.. well why not pop a pill and the craving goes away? It's not a magic pill to make you thin, just a tool to help your own efforts. Kind of like nicorette patches...

[EDIT] Reading back.. you could just take speed, or smoke a fag for that matter 🙂

Should be relatively easy tho right? I mean.. theobromine and phenethylamine in pill form might work.

It's called ephedrine (plenty of other things will do too). It might not give you a cakie-full feeling, but you won't be hungry.

what like a cigarette 😀

Good for appetite suppresion

I don't think that fags would pass the tox screen though these days though. Plus the cancer/heart disease/etc... side effects would be frowned upon.

Drug based appetite suppression has been done.

People did. Diet pills used to contain amphetamines. Now its probably something a little less buzzy 😉

Overall the fact you think this is a brilliant new idea is making me chuckle tho. Have you met the billion dollar diet industry?

My mate works for Pfizer...

Can ask him who you might have to contact about this kind of thing if you'd like?

Well the fact that I am disclosing it on STW rather than writing to my lawyer about it is a bit of a giveaway that I am not entirely serious.

However I do think a pill targeted at simulating a cream cake instead of just suppressing appetite would be pretty cool. You could even make it taste of whatever it simulated too for added psychological benefits.

My mum's best friend was prescribed speed at one point for weight loss. It totally worked but she was speeding her tits off all the time. I find this idea fairly amusing since she's a bit of a character as it is 🙂

Willy Wonka got close but his ethics committee rejected phase IV testing. Mind you, that gozzy-eyed lass off Tomorrow's World always seemed to think we'd be eating meals in pill form by now.

Hmm.. mix up say xanthan gum with bicarb of soda and citric acid. So when you eat the pill, it tastes like cake and then it expands into a digestable but large foamy mass in your stomach. Tastes like cake, fills you up like cake, but no calories. Problem solved.

Jamie, I have a book called 'where's my jetpack?'. A fine read 🙂

That wasn't my idea. I meant a pill that would make you think you'd eaten a chocolate bar or cake specifically, not just feelign less full.

The point being that sugar, fat, theobromine etc etc have an effect on the brain that can't be replicated by eating ryvita and low fat cream cheese. So with my pill you'd eat something healthy, pop the pill and end up feeling satisfied.

I imagine addictino would be a massive problem tho.

You clearly have no idea how the pharma industry works. It does not look for something that is needed and then aim to produce it. It test thousands upon thousands of molecules to find out what they do in the hope that they can find a reaction which might be favourable as a medicine. Viagra developed for example because they were working with molecules that showed evidence of dilating blood vessels and it was then trialled as a drug for angina. Patients in the trial however began to report interesting side effects and the whole focus changed.

And remember there are 2 disasters in drug development. Firstly you can produce something that kills people. Secondly you can produce something that cures people.

If you are thinking about patenting the "idea" then dont be an idiot and post on here what it is, because then you arent able to patent. alternatively if you dont care, and you dont want a massive Pharm company patenting it, then post on here and its in public domain....

avdave.. I am not stupid. It's called humour 🙂 I know there's no way I could get such a pill invented, which is why I posted it on here. Cullen - you can't patent an idea, you have to have designs and stuff to show you actually invented something not just had an idea.

But drugs are also made for certain purposes. Possibly more at universities than in big pharmas.

I wasn't referring to your stupidity, on which I don't feel qualified to comment :-), rather the general belief that pharma looks for problems and then tries to find solutions. It doesn't. It tries things, sees what happens and then tries to find a problem for which the thing that happens might be a solution.

Really just 2? I know someone who would beg to differ with that but he can't reach the keyboard to answer.

I've taken a few paracetamols in my time, in STW terms, that qualifies me to advise you, so tell me your idea. 😀
