We've had a good clear-out of books and have a lot, by which I mean a good couple of hundred, if not more, to get rid of. Vast majority is fiction, just stuff that's been read that we won't read again.

I know that charity shop is the obvious option, but there's far too many really to give to one shop in one go. So, next option is to drip-feed to local shops over a period of time, but I wondered if anyone was aware of any charities or organisations that want and will take bulk-loads of books? Ideally in the North West, but happy to travel a bit to deliver them if it's a good cause.

I've taken car loads to my local Oxfam book shop. (Back seats folded flat and the entire back filled with boxes plus loose books.) Might be worth contacting one?

If you could be arsed to catalogue them (or some of them) then maybe list on here, and people could donate say £2 per book to a charity of your choice?

Edit: Oxfam bookshop is probably easiest though!

Some charities have specialist bookshops. Oxfam have quite a few, as already mentioned. We have a local Amnesty International shop that takes books by the boxful.

If you have any about nature, biology, ecology, environmentalism or loosely in that area then my wife collects them to set up libraries in visitor centres. She usually buys from charity shops, so you could cut out the middle man in exchange for a donation, but we are in the SW so probably not ideal.

You could try the Whaley Bridge transhipment warehouse in the basin as that has a large book donatioon / sales place.
All money raised goes towards running costs / maintenance of the warehouse and the community projects there.

Boom! Well done that man, just gave them a ring and they'd be happy to have them. Result.

I’ve got a slip-case copy somewhere, not sure where, though.

Dorothy House take books, in fact the branch in town seem to be making a thing about it, they regularly have a big display in their window of all sorts of art books, comics, architecture, music, even old music magazines. A friend and former colleague of mine is/was rather an obsessive book collector, particularly print, design, art and typography books, and he literally had them loaded on several pallets in the storage warehouse of the place we both last worked at! He had to ‘downsize’ his collection, and struggled to find anyone, but I’m pretty sure it was Dorothy House In Malmesbury who were happy to take them in the end.

Edit/ sorry, missed the post above, but anyone else looking to divest themselves of old books might find Dorothy House worth a try.

I’ve got a load of old paperbacks upstairs that could do with a clear out, mostly SF, but a lot of Dick Francis stuff of my late stepdad’s that just got shoved there out of the way.

It's exactly what I did. Offloaded well over 200 to a high street charity shop. Obviously I spoke to them first! It took several car-loads and they couldn't take them off me fast enough.

I went to a talk by Robin Ince a couple of weeks ago. He said he'd just given 3 thousand books to Leicester Prison

Apparently friends coming round didn't even notice the dent it made in his collection!
