my daughter does a lot of drawing on an ipad so thinking that a graphics tablet may be a good call for her, can anyone give me any info on them as in what to look for, what to spend etc?

Best place to start is to look for the Wacom stuff, they seem to be the best in graphics tablets across the range. They do a stylus that you can use on the iPad as a drawing pen that has pressure sensitivity, they also do a fairly good cheap starter graphics tablet called Bamboo.

I have had one of their Intuos tablets for years and getting stuff done in Photoshop or other graphics work is night and day easier than with a mouse.
Thing to remember of course is that there is a disconnect between a graphics pad and what you are drawing, it can take a while to get the hang of drawing on the tablet but looking somewhere else entirely for the resulting output. If you have a few thousand pounds going spare then Wacom also do graphics monitors where you draw directly on the screen. Might be going a bit far for now though.. 🙂

I'm looking at tablets at the moment. Hadn't thought of using them for this type of thing.

Are there any disadvantages compared to a "standard" android tablet?

Edit: ignore me for now. I'll have a look into it myself. More dfferences than I thought!

Think you might be misunderstanding the devices in question. Unfortunate crossover of the use of 'Tablet'.
A graphics tablet is simply an input device, like a mouse or a keyboard. It's not a full blown handheld touchscreen computer like an Android tablet.

£60 🙂

Sounds great, why pay crazy Wacom prices?

yep, its a graphics tablet i'm after. the prob with anything Ipad related is that the pad is the schools and nothing can be loaded apart from what the school requires. so i'm thinking tablet running on an old pc that i have.

That does look quite a bargain, resolution and reporting rates look competitive. Let us know how you get on.
Having said that the smaller Wacom tablet is only £50, it's smaller but I hardly think it warrants the word 'crazy', Wacom have good support for their products, I still get driver updates for my 10 yr old pad.! As usual with all these things, you pay a little extra for the brandname and the backup/support. Some people would rather that, others are happy to go with an unknown chinese brand and save the cash. To each his own.

the pressure levels and how the pen behaves with tilt, the touch control (if you want it) driver support, different pen tips (easy to source) wireless connectivity and touch/scroll wheel, comfortable pen.

i use them all the time so it’s worth using the best, if it’s just for occasional use then a bamboo is fine, they are not exactly ‘crazy’ in price unless you go up to the big ones and having had an A4 it’s actually too big so only use the mediums now.

We have a wacom one for our daughter. It's been fine. She's used it lots in the last three years without a problem across a couple of windows versions and a desktop/laptop. Can't remember which one it was- about £80 I think

I've got an Intuos 2, absolutely fantastic bit of kit (I had a Graphire 2 before that). As people have mentioned, build quality is really good and you can still get new drivers for them years and years later.

I'd love a Cintiq, really can't justify it though. 🙁
