One of my struts is screeching like a banshee when the boot closes
I assume as they are sealed units it's not recommended to lubricate the struts with anything?
Or is it just a sign of imminent strut failure?

I wouldn’t use anything other than a silicone grease intended for seals on the shaft, however it might be the bushes at each end which you could try a spot of the same.

They are dirt cheap to buy replacements for and can be fitted with no tools, just pull off and snap new one back in.

There was a company recommended on here a while back, does anyone remember who it was? Or have a link?

My Mondeo struts are a bit tired.

I'd lube it with silicone spray but have greased before with success

just pull off and snap new one back in.

Depending on your car support the boot before taking off the old one.

I had great fun trying to hold up a van tailgate when I didn’t do this.

Can recommend SGS-Engineering if you do go for replacement.

I've used them for 2 cars now, no issues.

They are the easiest thing in the world to change - they just need an electrician’s screwdriver to pop off the retaining clip and swap over. Do one at a time so the boot doesn’t drop.

Dang, they don't do them for a MK3 Seat Leon.

Mine is a drooping already 🙁

Sometimes struts for another vehicle will be compatible. Couldn't find any for my car but turned out Merc ML ones fitted and work great.

I bought some off eBay a few years back for my old Berlingo.
Supposedly for that vehicle.

They were like a trebuchet! 😳
Nearly took out a few folk who unsuspectingly opened my boot.

That's just a golf isn't it? I'd take a gamble that it was exactly the same one for a golf.

You've got to watch for the force/rating - usually stamped somewhere on them. I fitted uprated struts to my T5's tailgate to counteract the weight of the bike rack. Opened the tailgate with the rack removed once and it just about launched me into next door's garden.

I used SGS for a custom bonnet I had made. I gave them the eye length and I guesses at the pressure based on looking at other cars and they sent out some that were perfect.

Or an octavia pair. Which is a golf I think...

mine arrived today..
fitted with ease..*
work well.
top marks for the recommendation chaps!

DrP

* I say with ease. I actually mean the old ones were so pants, that as soon as i popped one of them off, the boot slammed down on my hand and I'm sat at work with a medical ice pack on my crushed and bleeding knuckles!!

Is there a car selector on SGS or am I just not seeing it?

EDIT oh I see it, top left when you mouse over 'gas struts' - 'view all car gas struts'.
