Thinking of adding an outdoor Wifi unit to the back of the house so the garden has good coverage (for the upcoming Indian Summer). Any recommendations?

If not, will probably go with this unit:

The alternative would be an amplifier and upgraded antenna for your current router. Apparently a good set-up can get 1.5 mile range. I've never looked into it closely enough to know if it works out better value than the linked unit though.

I have an 2nd (old/spare) ADSL router slaved to my main one, to serve the back garden, using a couple of powerline plug to connect the two.

How big is your garden? Can't you just use a standard one at near a window at the back of the house?

That's basically the setup I want, although I've run CAT-5 to the back of the house (as I was replacing the floor anyway). Current Wifi box is an Apple Extreme, and gives excellent in house coverage, but it stops pretty quickly after the back wall of the house.

I have a wifi repeating home plug on an external wall which serves the far end of the house and back garden. Despite thick millstone grit walls its still it gives good enough signal to stream euro sports.

What is your house made of? might be worth trying that first.

Yep, I have a repeater right next to the exterior wall of the house facing the garden. Reaches right down the bottom of the garden which is reasonably long.

Just got round to setting it up:

Quite possibly the simplest UI I've ever seen, plug in and connect via Wifi, just click on a button marked "Repeater" enter the SSID and password and click "config" and it's up and running!

Let us know how how it shapes up range-wise, I'm interested in a couple of those.
