Mrs Kenny has been doing a bridge evening class this autumn and really enjoying it. She wants a book for Christmas, something for beginners and novices. Easy to read and which explains the basics clearly and simply. Any recommendations?
I have googled and as with most hobbies "XXX for Dummies" gets thrown up first. But loads more too, so it's hard to know, particularly as I don't really play myself.
Cheers
I learnt to play many years ago & did have a few books but cannot remember the names of them. I would suggest a book on Acol bidding (I assume she would be using that to bid) & a separate book on playing hands. I did have a book with lots of played hands in & I did find that useful at the time.
As an aside, my daughter has just started to learn to play & is really enjoying it.
I play quite a bit. There are so many beginners books I'm not sure any really stand out - Andrew Robson is a good writer from what I've read, Ron Klinger also.
Acol is bad once you know what you're doing, but most UK beginners start there. If that is what is played in your wife's class then it makes sense to learn the system.Â
Bidding has changed a lot over the years but defence and the play of the hand is timeless - the best texts are all quite old. They can be drily presented, though, so not as easy to read when you're starting out.
Cravat and Pimms sling optional ?
Cheers guys, will check those out. As for the cravat, Pimms etc, she got into it because our croquet club has a winter bridge section. All very Edinburgh!!
I highly recommend Peter Mendelson's books, especially Bridge for Complete Beginners, The Right Way to Play Bridge and Winning Ways to Play Your Cards. I have previously recommended these books to several beginner and intermediate players and they have all found them easy to read and very instructive.
Cheers, those Paul Mendelson books look perfect. Much appreciated.
