Been doing the plank a lot of late in search of a six pack and found out it's considered by many as a staple yoga thing. This led me to google Yoga and having never given it any thought before now think it could be a cool way of toning up. Also really like the spiritual inner healing aspect as I'm a tad bi polar and it's supposed to be great for combatting depression. Anyone do it/done/have any real life experience of it?
yeah, its good. Harder than you'd think and you come out feeling properly worked. Great for building core strenght and improving posture and flexibility. I'm not so into the spiritual side, I went to a session where the woman leading started with a prayer to her inner goddess which was awkward, but yeah, I like it, good for injury rehab as well as its low impact and if it hurts, stop stretching!
Yes I have, I used to do some Ashtanga with Granville here in Manchester but haven't done it for a while.
It's incredibly physical and demanding and, yes, it is both spiritual and uplifting.
I'm not sure how old Granville is, he's a man of mystery and will only ever say that he's "eternally young" but I reckon he's past 50 ...he has a killer 6 pack!
Search on here - loads of threads before. Every teacher I've had is different (even if supposedly teaching a particular variant) so try a few different classes to see which you like.
My recommendation is Ayenger for a few months to learn the poses properly then some form of Dynamic/Ashtanga for fitness and strength (or mix them up).
I've only done is sporadically, but find it incredibly relaxing, come out of a session and feel completely relieved of all worries and very calm. Reminds me I must make an effort to go regularly...
Did it for years until my teacher left the area. Never found another as good as him. I found it really good at core stability and as an asthmatic I found yoga breathing a huge help. As others have said, each teacher has their own take on the subject but it is well worth a try. It might take a few sessions to get used to the procedures but stick with it and you should fell the benefit.
Do or do not, there is no try..
... Oh, Yoga! Sorry!
