wifes after a new phone as her moto g speaker seems to have packed up. tried the old 'toothbrush bristles in the hole' trick but still very quiet.

shes doing a bit of google searching and asked me about oppo phones as she likes one of them but ive never heard of them. told her the usual advice is whatever moto g she can afford, but is that still the case?
seem to remember a thread a while back recommending refurbed phones but i cant find it.

shes asked me to do a bit of google research tomorrow, but you chaps always seem to have the best advice 😉

so.....oppo? moto? something else completely? sub £200 please, ideally a fair bit less.

thanks

Oppo phones are quite good value. Check out the reviews for them on GSMarena.com I research all my phones on there first.
Have you thought about maybe looking at what CEX have got if you don't mind a second hand handset? They give a 2 year warranty on phones and it might save a nice chunk.

Yeah, Oppo are good. Part of the same company as Vivo, Realme and OnePlus.

Like Houndlegs suggested above have a look on Hotukdeals and see what appeals. I don't think Motorola are quite the budget market leaders they used to be.

Better half has Oppo A9 2020, battery lasts days, she had had no complaints with it for 2+ years.

I got a Poco F3 256GB for ~£180 a few months back direct from their site, super speedy bargain.

Yeah I have an oppo. Was better than the equivalent (low-end) price point Samsung A-whatever that I had before.
Good battery too.

Oppo review well. Which magazine seems to like them. If you're happy with refurb/nearly new, have a look at the music magpie website. Very credible company and they have excellent deals

I've just sold a Realme which was mentioned above as being part of the same company - amazing phone for the money I wish I'd replaced it with the latest version rather than the Pixel 6 Pro which seems like a huge step backwards in functionality.

Oppo brand mobile is popular in the far east.

Heard of Vivo? My first smart phone is Vivo LOL!

My Vivo is about 6 to 7 year old and it's still working ...

Vivo price and range here.

Typing this on a Poco f3. Great phone only marred by glass back. I'd buy another tomorrow. Tremendous spec at 1/3 the price of familiar names.

That's your standard legal rights with (almost) anything you buy online.

The only issue I see with Oppo is their lack of commitment to Android updates

Many OnePlus Nord phones are slightly altered and rebranded Oppo handsets.

is it? for any reason? id have thought just a change of mind (no defects) would have meant you pay the postage yourself. you live and learn.

Bear in mind I have/had the local Chinese variants

I had OPPO Reno 4 pro 5g and then 5 pro+ 5g. The highest models. They were stable phones. Screen colours seemed unnatural, garish. Speakers not the loudest. Easy enough to put Google services on, but not working 100%.

I've now got a Realme GT Neo 3 because of the amazingly fast charging. Screen has muted colours, with loud speakers. It's not 100% stable due to lack of international availability and software testing. Frequently camera videos don't save and when you realize, you heed to restart the phone. Some software is siezing the phone and causing CTDs. I think many international software companies haven't got access to the phone so aren't able to include it.

But it charges mega fast.

I did manage to order one - it seemed that only the link worked, not going back into website to order.

Op, try celotape faced down on speaker then probe / prod with sim tool

tried this but no joy. i assumed you meant that the sellotape would stick to any bits of fluff and pull them out, but in effect, the sellotape sticks to the phone first and the sim tool actually just punches a hole through it, so not really effective.
i tried wrapping the sellotape round the tool rather than sticking it to the phone, but still no good.

thanks for the suggestion tho....

The only issue I see with Oppo is their lack of commitment to Android updates

Pretty much standard in the Android world.

Most companies are looking to churn out new models all the time and Android is such a mess that it needs dedicated firmware and drivers for each one and hardware requirements limits options on latest Android for old models. Firmware has to be made for different regions and carrier deals also, per model. Then has to go through certification process which is time consuming and costly. They don't want to be supporting old models for long. Plus if people could upgrade the software they won't buy the latest model.

A few do three year updates I think. Many less, and some of the cheapies are basically none.

Shame Windows Phone died as at least Microsoft, for all their faults, produced an OS that runs across a lot of hardware and mobile version updated on same schedule as regular Windows 10 updates.

I've been running a xiaomi 8T for the last 18 months, no issues at all with android updates coming through etc and their own MIUI interface .. all updated ... Do have a nice shiny Xiaomi note 10 pro sitting on my desk , but think the wife may have it as she loves taking pics and the camera on the 10 pro seems very good 🙂

Me and the missus both have Oppo phones and would rate them as good if not better than the Xiaomi's that they replaced.

Both seem more stable and get updates more regularly.

Got an Oppo Reno 4 pro 5g, it replaced a Xiami Mi 8 Pro. Liked the Mi 8, and I like the Oppo. I wouldn't say I'm a heavy user - mostly emails, teams, whatsap, etc. Seems good for the price - battery is good and has a 15min/75% charge thing. Wireless calling and text works well, and had no issues roaming abroad with it. Camera seems OK too, if not amazing.
