I need to find out if my car has the correct ECU in it... I suspect it's been replaced by a slightly different version.

I do, would need your vin, even then VW use the get out clause of "its only a guide". Why do you think it has the wrong ECU?

Loooooooong story, click my profile and look for threads started about my car if you want the back story, but my ECU was un-necessarily replaced by a dodgy mobile mechanic, who sourced the part from a seemingly respected specialist.

However it complains about a short to ground in the inlet manifold position sensor. It still does it when the sensor is unplugged, which indicates wiring, but the wiring tests ok. ElsaWIN suggests that there are two slightly different versions of the wiring loom and presumably ECU around at the same time, right about when my car was made.

Thanks for helping 🙂

You can (or could) get both ETKA and ElsaWin on eBay - quite useful to have

Yeah I just bought ElsaWIN for £6, didn't think it was worth buying ETKA for just this one job.. but then again, the car's not getting any younger and I seem to be getting into this home repair lark.

You'll need engine / transmission / model year codes and a few other details I think.

Great, that's really helpful, ta.

The sticker's damaged on my ECU though 🙁 The bit I can read says 03G 906 018 which looks reasonable.... I wonder what that square barcode says...

If you can get it code read by a good system it should give you the hardware version, which is basically the part number on the ECU, the software part number as when VW do software updates the part number often changes (mainly the last 2 letters of the part number), also it should tell you the software version of the ecu. Unfortunately VW don't give out lists of software part numbers or software versions and the reason the software needs updating.

I have VCDS.

Thanks for the useful info. I'm going to have to fight to get a refund off this mechanic who messed me about, but the car still isn't right and I blame the part supplied by the specialist.. which wasn't actually required.. where the jeff is my old part I want to know.
