Is this a scam?? Apparently the early versions have a faulty battery and Apple are replacing them for free? Sound dodgy??
mmmmmmmmm, i'm 'in the trade' and haven't heard about this 😕
Covered on here a couple of days ago. If it is a scam they have done a good job of getting a page onto Apples servers and they are asking for something pretty old. They send out a box to return them in so I guess if it is a Nigerian PO box I won't bother but seems ok otherwise.
Thanks Drac, missed that first time round! Never thought to look on apples sites
No worries and thanks as I forgot the wife had one so you've reminded me and it's now going to be replaced.
I got the email today. What will they be replaced with? Will it be a new nano or are they just replacing the battery?
EDIT: Just looked around on google and it seems it will be a replacement 1st gen nano. I'm guessing they won't have that many 1st gen nanos around so I might hang onto mine for a bit in the hope they run out and replace it with a new one.
It's not a scam iron the apple uk site, sadly my 1st gen nano isn't part of the program
Filled it in and my little box is on the way!

I reckon they might have a few lying around waiting for new batteries to go in.
thanks to who ever posted on here the other day - i did check the url carefully! and then had to deal with one of the kids having used my email address to create an apple login - mine usually kept in gym bag in car as emergency back up - guess if car had burnt out last thing would have thought of blaming think it said 6 weeks to return so i guess some kids in china will be swopping batteries and polishing them up a bit
Maybe I overlooked it.
Could they not have sent out a normal sized one instead?
Daily mail seem to know what we will get?
http://www.****/sciencetech/article-2062147/Apple-iPod-Nano-recall-earliest-model-If-new-free.html
Yay
Just applied for my replacement.
The announcement seems suitably vague though - enough to put off lots of people from bothering to send theirs back if they think they will only get an identical replacement. If they admit they are sending out 6Gen ones then everyone and his dog will be looking under mattresses for their old unit in order to get a nice new one.
I am sending mine back anyway as it gets used daily and I don't fancy it setting our car alight.
Could do with knowing what they're replacing them with. Newer models won't charge using the Wife's MX5 Bose ipod cable & my 1st gen one is left permanantly attached to it for that very reason. I'm probably one of the few people wanting a "like-for-like" replacement.
It's a like-for-like replacement
RAD - have you actually read the article you have linked to twice now?
When we asked Apple how many of those first-generation iPod Nanos were available for the recall, the company was not willing to reveal that information. We wanted to know why Apple wasn’t more specific about which iPod Nanos would be used as replacements in its original announcement, but the company wouldn’t answer that question, either.
Yes. The bit where it says they will be sending out 1st generation nanos
Mashable talked with an Apple spokesperson on the phone, who confirmed the company will be sending first-generation iPod Nanos
suggests to me they will be sending out 1st generation nanos
Yes but the SUBSEQUENT paragraph is where it becomes less clear...
Mashable talked with an Apple spokesperson on the phone, who confirmed the company will be sending first-generation iPod Nanos to those whose serial numbers match the units with defective batteries. When we asked Apple how many of those first-generation iPod Nanos were available for the recall, the company was not willing to reveal that information.
So they claim to be sending out the originals but won't/can't say how many they have to actually replace which suggests to me they might have some to cover a small replacement programme, but might end up having to replace with newer models if too many people take up the offer.
Applied, got bag & box in the post and sent it off yesterday.
I'll be happy to get a perfect, shiny replacement 1GB one back to abuse for a few more years, but will be equally happy with a more recent replacement.
Given how complicated opening one up and replacing the battery is (they go together easily on the assembly line but opening one without damaging it is incredibly tricky), I can't see how they'll refurbish hundreds of thousands of the things in any reasonable time. Unless they kept back huge warehouses of them, they won't have units available to ship out. They'd need an army of very skilled people to do it, they'll need a load of replacement backs for engraved models, and take the time to do full tests on everything sent out. It would rapidly get to the point where just sending out a refurb current (or previous gen) Nano is more cost-effective. Nano sales seem pretty flat these days anyway, they probably have a stockpile of them somewhere.
Apple will be keeping tight-lipped because they don't want it reported as "hey, send in your old one, get a shiny new one for free!".
Apple in being vague shocka.
You're making assumptions there and I'm inclined to go with what they've actually stated rather than reading between the lines.
Maybe it will happen but I think that those who received an old one might get upset when subsequent people get a new one and that won't look good.
Also, call me cynical, but a website claiming to have spoken to an un-named Apple rep and getting that response, when no-one else has got the same? A suspiciously good way of driving traffic to your advertising-heavy site, no?
I got the email. If my wife could be bothered to go into the loft to find an old Nano (I'm 400 miles away), I'd send it in immediately.
Mashable is a huge site (50+ million monthly pageviews according to Wiki) with a focus on technology - I wouldn't be surprised if they've managed to get someone at Apple to spill the beans over, say, the Daily Fail.
I'm quite happy to be proved wrong though as I'm waiting for my box as we speak!
They've probably got a massive stock of unsold Nanos they want to dispose of. I changed my battery about 2 years ago and vowed I would never do it again so I'm sure they won't be doing that, it's a complete ball-ache.
All with potentially dodgy batteries though! They've probably got a massive stock of unsold Nanos
I've a 1st generation nano, just checked the serial number and it's not being recalled 😥
awww bugger i threw mine away a few years ago 😡
The original email from apple says:
If you have a personalised iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalised replacement. Make sure you use iTunes to back up any data on your current iPod nano before sending it in for a replacement unit.
I presume from that you'll get a fully refurbed version and not one with a screwdriver mark down the side where they've forced it open, and then just stuck a new battery in!

Anyone had their box yet? I applied a week ago and seen nothing
Nope
3 of us in the office have registered but no boxes yet from a week ago
No box for me either.
Mine went through the washing machine, which killed the screen, but I still use it (and it works perfectly) in the car, because it has no other use I have no qualms with it living permanently in my glovebox - the theives are welcome to it! Be interested to see if they quibble though, as it sort of technically doesn't work!
Still no box!!
The thing with Apple is that they're really good at controlling stock. It's always surprised me how quickly a new iPod is available in the shops after being announced and, more importabtly, how quickly the old model disappears from the shelves...
It wouldn't surprise me if they have a lot of old kit lying around..
I was hoping for a new Nano though... 🙂
My box was shipped on the 19th - should be here today then even if they sent it second class
Not seen my box yet either.
I ordered my box on Friday, I'm hoping that by ordering late they'll have run out of old nanos to replace it with and maybe I'll get a new one... but more realistically I expect I'll get one of the first ones sent back but refurbished. 🙁 I wonder what they do if you had the personalised engraving on the case?
Rio

Dammit!
It's here - it's a bloody big envelope for something the size of a nano!
If you have a personalised iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalised replacement
Ah, that's alright then, so I guess I won't get back a refurb one that says "love and kisses from xxx" on the back; not sure how I'd explain that to Mrs R.
njee - there's a note in this envelope about liquid damage. You have to contact them if your product has evidence of accidental damage
Got my envelope today!
Anyone had replacement ones? I just found mine today and ordered the envelope/box.
Not yet but I only sent it off yesterday. 😀
Received my envelope about a week ago and sent it off rapido.
Personally I'd prefer a like for like as I did have one of the current nanos as a company Xmas present and although it's a lovely looking bit of kit,I did not find it as user friendly ,I could easily adjust the volume or skip to the next track without taking my old nano out of my pocket, can't say the same for the new one.
It would appear that the old nano's we sent back are being replaced with the new 6th gen models! w00t!
Happy with that although it did seem like sending off a faithful friend! (sort of)

That's interesting. It still works (except for the screen), and resides in the glove box of my car (where I don't care the screen doesn't work) on the iPod connector, so I can't see they'll refuse it, or my car may catch fire!
Be a proper result if we got 6th Gen ones! Must send mine off!
STW is great. I would NEVER have known about this otherwise. Cheers
So has anyone actually got one back? Wondering what it will be now, and wondering if I should have been patient and sent it as late as possible to get a newer one...
Still, bonus either way.
I returned mine about a month ago so hoping for the replacement pretty soon.
Will let you know exactly which model it is when it turns up.
Edit: I just checked the postage receipt and it was actually only sent on the 2nd Dec so I'm jumping the gun a bit, they did say 6 weeks originally so taking that and the Christmas break into account I wouldn't realistically expect mine for another month I guess.
Yea, but when somewhere says "within 28 days" do you ever expect it to take that long? Am hoping it will be within 6 weeks, hopefully today 🙂
Not going to check the postage receipt in case it was very recent... 😉
You can use the check repair status thing on their website. I've checked and mine was only received this week ( sent two weeks ago)
Mine was received by apple on the 9th (sent on the 27th Nov) says pending
They found a huge consignment of unsold Nanos in Steve Jobs's garage. Most Nanos will have died by now although mine was going fine because I replaced the battery, a small but extremely irritating and difficult task I shall never undertake again.
I sent mine off on 28 November and the repair status on Apple's web page didn't change until last week when it changed to show it having been received on 13 December. It now says "Product Replacement Pending". Not holding my breath...
I have the envelope but haven't sent it off yet. I tried reading the instructions but didn't understand them. 😥
Same, waiting to hear if it's worth it. If you get a nw one fine, but if it's someone else's with a new battery and back then no, I will take they risk
I have the envelope but haven't sent it off yet. I tried reading the instructions but didn't understand them.
just put pod in smaller envelope (says box on the instructions)
Give to postie and ask for a proof of postage
If you are fishing then i fell for it but hey ho its christmas
Mine has been sitting since the 9th Dec at awaiting replacement, so if it is dodgy they have taken apple in as well ..... I hope
Mine too shows awaiting replacement with that same Dec 9th date even though they had it a few weeks b4 that..................

I must admit I didn't read them very well and I had had a beer. I will read them again and do it over Christmas.
I wasn't fishing 🙁
Just had UPS at the door with a parcel, opened up to find a brand new touchscreen Nano. Thanks for the heads up guys the old Nano had just been sat in the kitchen drawer cos the battery life was crap. 😀
Just found out about this this morning, thanks STW.
Ordered the envelope but i've not had a confirmation email or anything through. Do i just sit and wait?
Yeah envelope should just turn up. Make sure you write down your serial no. as i forgot and couldn't track the progress. I also realised after I'd sent it off that I hadn't included my details even though you weren't asked to, but they must scan the label on the return envelope or just use the serial no. Very happy with the new one as it's 8gb whereas the old one was 2gb and couldn't fit enough music on it.
Sounds easy enough. Anyone got the tracking link? i've tried to find it but im not coming up with anything.
I'm normally alot more laid back about these things, but my computer at work crashed just after i submitted the serial number so i didn't have time to take not of any relevant www's or numbers.
Yep - ours arrived today and it's been replaced by a new 6th gen 8gb model. Result.
Ooo... I hope I get a 6th Gen model - I sent mine back on thr 30th Nov, received by Apple on the 14th December.According to the Repair Status, replacement is now pending.
Anyone else received a replacement yet?
I'd rather have a 1st gen back tbh, I'm not sure the new ones are compatable with the dock on my car stereo and from what I've read the new ones are almost impossible to use if you can't see the screen.
Although I doubt I'll get one at all, sent the old one off on the 20th(ish) of November, status still shows 'empty box dispatched' and I can't find the postage reciept. Think the missus might have thrown it in her pre xmas tidy up.
Again the power of the STW forum has given me heads up! My old Nano, which I gave to my son, is affected and an envelope will be on its way to me.
My son will be happy if he gets a 8gb touch nano. He moans that the 1gb isn't big enough.
Thanks guys!
Mines still showing as " replacement pending" since 7th Dec.
Ultimately not too bothered whether I get a new or old one as a replacement.
APple are pretty good with replacements full stop, wife washed her 4th gen iPod, didn't want to replace it with the lastest version rang Apple up and they replaced it with a brand new one of the same model at a very good price, i.e. a lot less than a new one.
Brand new touch screen version turned up this morning.
Despite my misgivings 😉
Very pleased. 6th gen touchscreen 8gb arrived via UPS this morning.
Good swap for a knackered 1gb Nano. 😀
Mine is still "replacement pending" and has been since the Nov 17th.
Oh well, in no major hurry. My 4th Gen seems to be holding up fine despite dropping it in the garden yesterday.
