Basically went to see ENT today after being referred by my gp as I’ve had 5 sinus infections this year. And struggle to breath through my nose.
So after having the scope up my nose, I’ve been listed for the above to open up the space in my nose, mainly my left side but the right side is very narrow also.
Most likely a consequence of breaking my nose in 2009 after hugging a tree to hard on my MTB.
Consultant has said two weeks off work due to my job (NHS Minion)
Any idea how long I’ll be off the mountain bike?
And I thought treehugging was supposed to be good for you 😀
Yeh, about 20 years ago for similar reasons. Right nostril like a cavern, left practically closed and a life long history of sinus issues.
It has helped a lot. Can't remember how long recovery was, but probably a couple of weeks. I do remember having horrendous headaches the first few days.
I had one when I was 18.
Horrific from what I remember.
The morphine was deployed. As above really sore head and then when they removed the endless gauze and dried blood it was also pretty nasty.
But so worth it id never been able to breath through one nostril. Now I can. Had to wait till I'd stopped growing before I got it though 🙁
I could have had a second procedure to straighten the external (rhinoplasty??.) But would have been left with external scarring and wasn't that bothered about it being squint so long as I could breathe
Have a look on youtube. "Removing nasal tampons"
I had a rhinoseptoplast about 30 years ago. To be fair it was awful but it did fix the problems I had - blocked nose and constant sinus infections, all caused by a broken nose. From, er, fighting. And a bit of sport.
I was in hospital for 4 or 5 days then off work for 3 weeks iirc. Massive bruising, like fully black and blue face and inside mouth. My dad only recognised me on the ward by the t shirt I was wearing. Had packing for about 2 weeks in the nostrils, I can still remember the blast of oxygen I got when they took it out...awesome.
Ask them what your nose will look like when it's done. I assumed they would talk about that but they didn't. Consequently my nose looks a bit, well, funky.
Been offered it, but not bothered yet. I sometimes find breathing not as easy as it should be, but I don't get infections so I've not gone through with it.
Had it done around 18 months ago after over 2 years waiting for an ENT appointment.
Can breathe slightly better now but not convinced it worked really.
Was done in a crappy day clinic, had to leave after a few hours of waking up from the general. Thanks York Hospital.
Also told I was discharged straight after the procedure so no follow up appointment.
Was crap.
Now live in Oz, thinking of getting it checked over here to see if it worked or if they can fix it properly.
I had mine done a couple of years ago. Did notice a difference breathing after it had all settled down. Had 2 weeks off work, think that's standard. I waiting till the swelling had gone down before riding again, no other reason than knew it'd hurt more if I knocked it. When they take the packing out is definitely the best bit, videos don't do it justice! Had mine at York too, OP and home in the same day is fairly normal for that sort of stuff.
I was in for 3-4 days at ninewells for mine.
Hated that part.
That sounds pretty pants,i was out a couple hours after coming round. Had to be picked up but they were happy once it wasn't bleeding.
I think various top Olympic XC riders have had it done to enhance performance haven’t they?
Sounds delightful, I'm just fed up of infection after infection. And feeling like my head and eye was about to explode on the flight home from Greece.
Feel like I have a constant cold.
Didn't really get told much apart from, the risks of surgery and he will use disolvable packing and sutures inside.
He is the Head of ENT at my local hospital and I'm having it done at a BMI hospital as a NHS patient.
My last experience of this was when i had my Hernia op.
Had mine around 2 years ago after lots of sinus infections. Can't say it's helped at all to be honest! I've had 5 this year, each needing antibiotics, and I'm waiting for another ENT appointment.
I woke up and felt amazing, basically discharged myself and wondered what all the fuss was about as ENT Doctor (Private, in NZ) said I'd be out for 2 weeks. Went home, when I woke up and the drugs had worn off and the swelling kicked in it was pretty awful. Not being able to breath through your nose for 2 weeks and not sleep properly is not fun.
That said, the first breath after they remove those giant plastic stints 3 weeks after the Op is amazing!
TL;DR: It works for some people but not all (which is pretty much what my ENT doc said to me). I'm still having to do daily sinus rinses etc... but it's worth a shot just make sure you rest up.
