Looking to buying a used diesel Range Rover Sport, does anyone here have any experience of them? It'll probably be a 2008/09 plate but not sure whether to go for the V6 or V8.
Cheers
That age will just be a Disco 3 underneath at that age, won't it? Quite a few thread on here about D3s. Generally people who've had them love them to bits - really comfortable, masses of space etc. But they're unreliable and some big running costs (I've had 2 x D3s)...
TDV8 or the Petrol V8?
IIRC the TDV8 is known for turbo issues, and some fixes require lifting the body off the frame so bills can get big...
http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/ is probably a good place to research...
Mate has a 2007 TDV8 - both turbo's chewed themselves up and the bill was upwards of £5k and I think that was having it done on the cheap
Another mate who has a lot of Disco's, but is capable of mending them himself, says that the only person who should own an out of warranty Range Rover is an RR mechanic.
Far too many horror stories
Surely no STWer would ever admit to that! 😯Anyone had a Range Rover Sport
Guy in work had an overfinch one, and yes he is very ostentatious. The turbo 'blew up', did some other damage and the bill to get it fixed was £12k, yes £12,000!
Thanks guys sounds like the V8 is a money pit, I was expecting a bit positive though. Ah well back to the VW Caddy!
Personally I would go full fat RR (FFRR) and it would be the TDV8 and get the turbos and EGRs checked out. The TD6 (not a V6) might be more reliable but the TDV8 is a lot more potent and about the same, or slightly better if driven carefully, MPG wise due to the huge torque.
I wouldnt touch the RRS as I think they have dated very quick and they are just a disco underneath but a lot smaller inside. RR and disco will swallow a lot more stuff but obviously the disco is a very different machine inside. Avoid the 2.7 TDV6. The newer 3 litre TDV6 is much better.
The one to go to is the newer TDV8 not the older 3.8. It is MUCH better but also quite expensive still.
Bills will be high if anything goes wrong.
I've got a 2012 V8 petrol gas guzzler (Yank version). Very nice to drive; comfortable for all-day cruising. Engine and gearbox are smooth; suspension is comfortable but not too rolly-polly. Interior is much better designed than the early ones which seem to have a million buttons on the console, and generally a very nice place to be.
Downsides are....it's a big expensive car so tyres brakes and servicing are not cheap. It's not that much bigger in terms of useful space than my old Lecacy estate. It's too nice to play with it offroad. The satnav is slow and non intuitive. And finally there is a mighty amount of stuff that could go wrong....air suspension, transfer box, all the traction control stuff, etc, etc. Having said that mine has been faultless to date.
I'd look for the latest one in your budget as these seem to be the most reliable.
Why? Just why?
I had one with the TDV6.
Lovely long distance cruiser & loads of room for anything you can think of it. A bit of a tank at the end of the day & I never managed more than about 30mpg. Plus lots of folks get all inverted & snobby about the vehicle - I guess that's only a problem if you care what small minded folks think..
They have a bit of a history with the crankshaft failing, as mine did & destroyed the engine.
The bill was about £12.5k (including replacement car hire) - luckily it was under extended warranty at the time! Basically the front of the car came off, the dead engine came out, a reconditioned engine went in.
IMHO I'd steer clear unless you have a good warranty on the vehicle!

My dealer has one 😉
How about an Evoque instead, might as well do the job properly 😀

Surely OverFinch is the way to go, very popular with the local Travellers...
But they're unreliable and some big running costs
My son works for a garage who specialise in Land Rovers, he advised me to avoid the RR Sports (and equivalent aged Disco's) - he works on them every day...
Why? Just why?
Because he wants one, its his money and he doesn't have to justify it to you?
I wouldn't have one but I'm sure the op couldn't give a toss about what I would buy.
Because he wants one, its his money and he doesn't have to justify it to you?
Bit sensitive arent you love? Why so keen to be offended for someone else?
Sensitive and offended, how so? I was stating a fact, you seem to be all touchy about it.
Not all just wondering why you felt the need to answer for the op.
I didn't. You'll note that I didn't give the reason why he wants the vehicle - that would have been answering for the OP.
But we all know that you're 'why, just why' 'question' wasn't posed because you really want to know why he's chosen that vehicle, it was intended as some sort of dig, you know that, we know that.
Not at all, many people have perfectly good reasons for having such a car, but for many it seems a compromise too far.
yeh, right
So there are no valid reasons?
Stop bickering you two. He's obviously either a drug dealer, or he lives in Cheshire.
Don't worry I have just been lambasted by the STW extreme left for possibly wanting a Ducati - get in line comrades you will have a choice in Corbyn land of the following Lada/Trabant or a forced March...
"Stop bickering you two. He's obviously either a drug dealer, or he lives in Cheshire."
Or around here, a moderately successful builder.

As long as its not a Diaval thats fine!
I wouldn't ****ing dare I would do ye forced march
Ssshhh stop talking about aspirational bling the Corbynites are listening and you can end up in the gulag or worse (yes islington)
I had a 2007 TDV8 RRS, it was the best and worst car I've owned. When it was working it was great, but it let me down too many times with things going wrong. Basically something major went wrong every year and the repair bill was in the thousands so I flogged it. Car had full RR service history and wasn't spanked, but still kept breaking. Shame...
That and very poor customer service cost my brand loyalty.
I had a 3 yr old Disco 3 a few years back. It was perfect for our needs and we kept it for around 2 years during which time it broke down a lot.
As a result of that experience I will never buy another JLR vehicle unless it's inside their warranty.
Good luck if you go for it!
mrlebowski& loads of room for anything you can think of it
Sorry, but i have to disagree with this point^^^
They are the ultimate "inverse TARDIS" imo. All the 4wd gubbins and big tyres and wheelhouses takes up masses of space, so for such a big car, the interior space is at best average. Something like an XC90, with it's transverse powertrain and much less off road optimised set up is significantly roomier inside for the same foot print, and a 4wd VAN, like a T5, will have something like 2x the useable volume!
Guy in work had an overfinch one
I am pretty certain the Overfinch is the RR platform, where as the RR Sport is the Disco.
Both exist. A neighbour of ours came into some money and bought an overfinch range Rover sport.
You can even get an overfinch Evoque and Defender.
I am pretty certain the Overfinch is the RR platform, where as the RR Sport is the Disco.
Whatever, it said 'range rover' on the front and it cost him the price of a small car to get it fixed 🙂
Overfinch is just a tuning company - they take a standard LR and make it go faster - eg. Range Rover Classics with Chevy v8s in. Or they used to, now it's "make it more appealing to footballers".
A friend of mine had an Overfinch TDV8 RRS. Previous owner was one Mr. C. Evans. The cost for a new set of front brake disks was somewhere north of £1000...
I thought it was more cosmetic stuff, but yeh I know what overfinch is.
Funnily enough the guy bought the vehicle from a footballer 🙂

I thought it was more cosmetic stuff, but yeh I know what overfinch is.
I think they used to be more go than show, but they went bust and were relaunched - now it seems to be more about bling...
Those overfinched vehicles are quiet expensive Range Rover Sport, £10 under £164,000!
Anyone had a Range Rover Sport

I have RR Sport wheels on my T5,go nuts ! 😉

Could buy a car for that.
A mate has always owned Range Rover Sports....when we went on a trip we made up some plates for it.... COCK 1
Sorry, but i have to disagree with this point^^^
1st Q: Have you owned one?
2nd Q: If so, what did you try & put in it?
My answers:
Yes.
Many bikes & luggage for a 3wk continental trip - plenty of space..
I had heard bad things about the car but this thread is at another level. 3yr old cars with numerous problems, £5k-£12k bills had a friend who boight one as he fancied a change from his long term 911, he told me it cost much more to own the Disco / "RR sport" and he got rid after 4 years of pain and expense.
Just buy a Range Rover or if price is an issue a Toyota 4x4
Just buy a Range Rover or if reliability is an issue a Toyota 4x4
