anyone ever suffered with a DVT ?
thing is, i have but cant seem to remember the symptons/ feeling.
went for a ride on saturday, spent a couple of hours in a beer garden.
got home at 7ish. a hour later my left calf started to feel odd. tight and tingly. very tender to touch.
No swelling No heat on touch, just tight and tingly and painful to touch.
went to bed. got up sunday, calf is the same but is a bit swollen. not hot.
pain is from above heal to back of knee. 12ish i phone 111. explain everything including that i have had a DVT in the past.
outcome is take painkillers and anti inflams if needed and DR will ring. still waiting for DR now.
took drugs twice. got up this morning. leg feels fine. bit of surface tenderness. possible tiny tiny puncture mark on my calf.
so sting ? possible DVT (but the last one started lower and moved over a few days until intense pain behind my knee).
MTFU ??
I do get those sort of symptoms with certain insect bites/stings, so I would rule that out. Still worth getting it checked out though as there are DVT-like issues that it could also be.
Yes, twice.
First, post op in the neck which blocked the return for the blood in my left arm. It blew up like a big grey marrow. A week of Heparin stomach jabs and a year of Warfarin then nada.
Second, in Feb just gone. Niggly sharp ache in both calves when walking after driving for 12 hrs coming back from the Alps. Just thought it was muscular pain having not run for a week whilst skiing. The clots then went on holiday to my lungs (Pulmonary Embolism) followed by an emergency Ambulance ride, 3 days in ICU and another 4 days in the Coronary Care Unit. Described as 'life threatening' to Mrs Boblo... 🙄 4 months later my HR is still raised and running/cycling performance is compromised. Life time Rivaroxaban (modern Warfarin equivalent) and hopefully 100% recovery to look forward to...
Don't muck about with it specially if you've DVT history. In my case, the thrombosis could have easily gone to the brain (stroke or lights out) or further stressed the heart to the point of attack. Get down to A&E and sit in the queue. My GP insisted on A&E initially as he thought it might be Sepsis. I was chucked out after diagnosis with some tablets and a note for the teacher to avoid PT... That night, it all went shit shaped. For 24 hrs I ignored the worsening symptoms until I Googled 'PE' - the search return of 'requires hospital treatment or often fatal' changed my tune.
A&E for you just to be sure.
DVT is potentially serious as you'll be aware. I had superficial VT regularly https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/superficial-vein-thrombosis-superficial-thrombophlebitis/ and it was always treated as potential DVT until ruled out by ultrasound. I thought that I could feel when I had one, but I couldn't 20% of the time it seems 🙂
Wells score, D-Dimer test, etc. https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/deep-vein-thrombosis/management/management/ NHS drop-in centres are very good and can jab you with anti-coagulant if needed
My leg went blue. All three times. It ached a bit as well, but the blue bit caught my attention far more. DM me if you want photos to compare
Mate of mine has just had the same as @timba. Four weeks in and on blood thinners and a compression stocking. He's still riding loads, but his leg is black with the haematoma.
Get it checked
I’m amazed that they didn’t get you to hospital asap given your heart history etc, I had one six years ago and all the associated lung issues that go with it, still suffering the effects of that, I’d be seeing the doctor and getting tests done rather than MTFU
i am pretty sure it is not a dvt.
last time it ached lower down. felt like a pulled muscle. it then moved up my leg, getting more painful until it was unbearable.
as of now, the leg is normal. no swelling, no pain no tenderness to touch.
if anything changes i have a season ticket for the heart unit at LGI.......... ;o)
I had no pain in my legs, the pains I had were lower back and lungs, it had already moved into my lungs by the time I got into hospital in NZ, I really wish I hadn’t waited for a week thinking it was jet lag and sleeping rough/bivvying along my way south
If you get a dull ache at the back of the knee, that's a symptom. I had a big one 26 years ago which means I wear a compression stocking most days or it can swell big time. But it hasn't stopped me doing anything and it hasn't recurred.
i am pretty sure it is not a dvt.
Yes, you're probably right, but the fact that it doesn't feel like the last one exactly is not particularly reliable.
You're now in the period where, as your lower leg symptoms recede, if you have clot and it is breaking down, small parts of it could be circulating getting ready to lodge in small blood vessels in your heart/lungs etc. It is these secondary embolisms that can really **** you up.
Sounds like the docs have not picked it up if you've had no callback after several hours. Contact them again, maybe?
If you get any (even very mild) breathlessness/cough/chest pain, straight to A&E.
My hospital has a DVT fast track pathway, can't recall if you need a referral from your GP though to use it. My right leg was swollen, i also though it was an insect bite. The Mrs persuaded my to the go the doctors and by that same evening i was in hospital. It was a Friday i think so a series of heparin injections over the weekend, back on Monday for ultrasound and full body CAT scan. Turns out it was a clot behind my knee. I had no pain or other symptoms other than a leg so swollen I couldn't tie my shoes any more.
As they could find no reason for it happening I'm now on 10mg rivaroxaban a day for ever more which don't cause me any problems - i have to carry the card and let my dentist know though.
TLDR: Don't mess about, get it seen to and insist on an ultrasound scan, don't rely on a blood test.
Minimal swelling and a dull ache for me both times. On the second occasion the blood test gave a false negative and I was told all was well. Developed a PE (clot on the lung) the following week (while ghyll scrambling, not ideal). Straight to A&E, Heparin etc. Fortunately no long term effects (I could blame it for my lack of fitness but it wouldn't be true). Now on apixaban for life as the rivaroxaban gave me bad reynauds. On the plus side, my BP is now within acceptable limits for the first time ever.
I have had a false alert since. I didn't feel any shame upon being told I was fine. You can't mess about with this shit.
just to clear this up, spoke to the DR.
after posting this thread i started with a sore throat and intense headache. also some nasty spots/yellowheads on my face.
DR reckons it was the start of shingles. course of antibiotics prescribed. feel fine now, even managed a short bike ride today.
cheers all.
