Just wandering what peoples thoughts on it are. Is it a massive change from the last generation? And is the screen any better?
looking at the 21" 2.7ghz model with 8gb ram and i7.
Get a lovely Dell for half the price.
Ordered the 27" earlier: i7, 8GB, 680MX, 1TB fusion
The screen is supposedly an improvement over the last version as the reflection is greatly reduced.

Yeah, and see it dumped in a year's time.
At work, we have a locked room, with old IT stuff in. Two shelves are full of old PC's, by which I mean about 18 months-two years. In our studio we have two iMacs, previous model, about three to four years old, plus two Mac towers, around eleven to twelve years old, both useable, but not in use, and one from 2001, still in use as a server.
I have a perfectly usable eight-year old PowerBook. I recently saw a bunch of gutted PC's none older than two years, thrown in a skip at work.
Sure, go ahead, buy cheap, you'll be getting the equivalent of a Halfords Apollo bike, when you could have the equivalent of a Turner. 😀

Windows simply needs a clean out every now and then. Nobody throws macs out because they are still paying them off 🙂
Dell makes some great machines that last really well. My last laptop did 6 years fine. My current workhorse PC just gets periodic upgrades to keep it on top - small amount each year. Still better value than a Mac.
Yeah, and see it dumped in a year's time.
A year? Really?
Even for you CZ, that's a stretch.
I prefer a depilator.

Yeah what do you do with it though? My macbook pro has done 3 years of none stop 3d rendering, video editing, illustrator, photoshop and web design software use every day of the week, it goes on at 10am, and off at 2am. Will never beat a mac in my eyes. Each to their own, but I do think the 'value' offerings out there are a false economy.

You'd have to.

Yeah, i'm sold on the i7 upgrade from i5 as standard, but will probably go with the 21" version. Have you found lack of cd drive particularly annoying? I can't for the life of me work out why they would take it out. Either way, I'm getting one and I'm sure I will love it as always.
I'll take ye into my work sometime and show you a mac graveyard.nukeproofriding - Memberbut I do think the 'value' offerings out there are a false economy.
Hell, just today I was pulling apart a couple of imacs to make one good one.

Indeed, and Apple have sold some God-awful shite for premium prices which they really should have recalled.
Yeah what do you do with it though?
You know just dick about on the internet...
3d Simulation Modelling across all cores
Video Editing
Big Data Crunching
DB Work
In the end I did like my old work IBM workstation was very solid for 4 years hard labour.
The HP's that replaced it were the same.

Is the truth, most are assembled in factories where people earn peanuts to put together components all from the same factories. The only difference with apple is marketing & mark up.
You say that, but I've never been let down by one.A computer is a computer, a mac is no more reliable than a pc box.
We have gumdrop g3s, mac 128k's and even SE's running in the 'ancient history' section of our office. None of them have ever broken.
Anyway, why every topic in internet history has to break down into a tit for tat on the subject of mac vs microsoft is beyond me. Pointless argument, each to their own etc.

To be fair the level of craftsmanship is usually higher. CNC'd aluminium on portable Macs for example. Yes you pay for it, but it is a factor.
That was my point, you're the one defending apples honour!nukeproofriding - Member

I'm saying give my anything half powerful and i'll make it do what I want. technology is fairly equal between apple and microsoft.
I never mentioned apples honour nor pc until someone jumped in and said get a pc instead for half the price, which then lead to 'pc's are more reliable' so I had to!

(Serious question) is this true for an IT ****witt? My biggest annoyance with pc's is how shit they are after a couple of years even with anti spy this and anti virus that. My PC is a few years old now but was bloody high spec (and expensive) when I built it and now it won't even play my go pro vids. Used to play fairly good graphics games too. This is the main reason I'm looking at an iMac. Will it be as shit?
As I say, honest question. I don't know what to expect.
Yes Jamie, sorry. Although if it's any consolation I have a PC which I built to run 3 hour 3d renderings etc. in the background, and also for gaming. I.E. Skyrim. That's why I bought it. Skyrim ffs.
It's a bit of a beast, but in a cheap toshiba case I found lying around. Quad core, lots of ram, big video card etc. yadda yadda.
But it will never replace any of my macs, they have a special place in my heart. And without them I probably wouldn't earn a dime. Well, I'd be back behind a bar serving drinks or robbing banks or something.
Will it be as shit?
CATEGORICALLY, UNDENIABLY, NO! Join the church of apple. If you ring them up you can normally wangle them into giving you an extended 3 year warranty free. I've owned loads of mac's and have never had to send anything for repairs. EVER.I think Pc's grinding down has something to do with the fact they're made from cheap ass components, the boards and soldering are shite unless you buy the components separately and assemble them and windows tires the shit out of everything it touches. They're designed to fail within a year or two, because it's good for business.

The hardware is almost identical.
The Apple Operating Systems are more restrictive with regards to what you can run on them, this is a GOOD thing as it means you are less likely to get ill-behaved programs trampling over each other. However, it is also a BAD thing as you have less choice. However, if you can get everything you need to run on your Mac, then be happy that you are paying for that assurance of compatibility.
Truth is, if you don't keep loading crap programs on a PC and you're not stupid about clicking on links in dubious emails, the PC will also run trouble-free for years.
As has already been said above, a re-load of Windows on a PC will often brighten the whole thing up, restore performance and kill any lingering errors.
honest answer, for graphics work, I prefer os x, purley for expose and the drag and dropability of the OS.wrecker - Member

For home stuff, browsing, music, films, torrents, office ie everyday usage, I use both, and don't have any preference or bother with either one slowing down. I hardly turn either machine off from month to month.
any modern i3 should last the average user for years and years without any slowing down. I'm still getting away with a p4 2.8 running XP and a core2duo running 10.4 for stuff in the house no bother(although I'm going to have to update the mac's OS as lack of support for browsers is becoming a pain.)
As will maxing the RAM on old computers.brighten the whole thing up
Depends what model, and the only things that are the same are the processor, possibly the power unit, the graphics card and wifi card. The hardware is almost identical.
Motherboards, screens, wiring, chassis, cooling methods, psu etc. are all different and make all the difference.

Uh Hu yeah of course they are, the LCD's are made by x,y or z. Along with everything else most likely LG, samsung, Foxcon etc.
Ok, I'm a self confessed IT knob. BUT I will not install program's, toolbars, shite etc. I really try to be careful but I'm obviously not good enough to keep a PC going. I'm quite particular about that. I'll be fair, my PC ain't new but it cost me more than a grand for the bits for the tower and now it can't even play a flipping video. I'm obviously not a programmer, the most demanding thing it needs to do is let me play with my precious go pros. Not a lot to ask I don't think.

HD video(4gig mkv's) plays fine on this p4 2.8 with 2gig RAM and XP. I'd imagine windows 7 or 8 will need higher spec than that mind you.
Point is mike, it's all different to budget pc's.
Mac's use quality components like panasonic batteries, and the motherboards are excellent.
Imac's are not built by foxconn - they are assembled in the US by various factories, but the components come from all over the world. None of the components in the imac are made by foxconn, they just do the iphone.
Software issue maybe? I.e. drivers for graphics card?now it can't even play a flipping video.
I have a p4 (6600 rings a bell) with a tera HD half full with 4 GB RAM and a good nvidia Graphics card.
Yep, the PC maybe clogged but that's kind of my point.
Windows vista ultimate.
Wrecker
Basics -
Create a backup or get a second drive to store all your docs, photos, videos etc on.
Re install Windows
Start fresh.
Max out the ram that you can fit - easy and cheap to do
If you keep an OS disc and data on other drives then you can easily start from scratch. If it's windows 7 you can take a backup image of the OS drive once you have installed everything.
That should restore you to where you were performance wise at the start.
If you don't want to go that way have a look at what is installed, things like TOmTOm, Printers, DropBox, Spotify and loads more all come on at startup. This is to give a perception that they load quicker but really just hang round in the background. Turn of the load on startup for these and uninstall stuff you don't use. Swap security to Microsoft Security Essentials a lot of others are bloated and slow stuff down.
If all of that fails if you see what your chip is that can also be upgraded nice and cheaply (unless you are at the top spec for the board).
Mike; do you think there's life in the old dog?
Quite importantly; is this viewed as a fairly common/ frequent maintenance regime for a PC? If do, would it be reduced if I did buy a mac? Sorry iMac.

Could well be that you are just on the limit there mate, P4 and vista might not go well together is my instinct, as you've got plenty ram and HDD space..
What player are you using, I just stick with the trusty old VLC player for video, so I don't have to mess with codecs.

Possibly....
If it ran fine on day 1 then there is hope 🙂
A good cleanup may help and is worth doing anyway especially if you are going to move or upgrade anyway.
As in the previous post you can upgrade a few things for not too much cash.
Chip up to max on the board
Motherboard & Chip plenty of good bundle deals around
Combine Board/Chip/W7 as an upgrade then it will zip along. Otherwise Ubuntu is the other method for PC acceleration.
All for a fraction of the cost of an imac.
Thanks for the go ahead. That was all I need.
I'm a complete computers knob, well compared to you guys (and most to be fair). My grandma and grandfather on the other hand are absolute PC novices. They got a PC on the advice of their daughters (it'll be great; email, facebook, shopping, etc etc).
I feel fortunate; my PC was operational for a good few years because I was aware of the shite floating about. They stood no chance. I turned their machine on (as apparently I was the Family "expert". Took 20 mins to boot. The I manage to look at what's going on and there is toolbars galore, all, sorts of shit.
Now I know it is their fault, I know that computers need an amount of knowledge, but in my opinion they're not really user friendly as yet. I'm a cautious bloke when it comes to computery stuff (if nothing else) and was/am happy that mine has lasted 4odd years. Seriously disappointed that it struggles with my riding vids from Italy though. Was 6 months ago and I haven't even seen them yet. Pretty shit. I've ran anti spyware, avg and many others. Shit.
I thought apple would be the answer to my prayers. However I have an ipad, 2 iPhones (work and own), my wife has an iPhone an Apple TV and heard about an apple utopia. BUT I'm seriously ****ed off. Why do apple insist on syncing everything as a default? Wife was receiving my texts (in and out) on default setting. I have nothing to hide (happily married) but it was majorly annoying. Same with contacts. She deleted my contacts from her phone and I lost everyone's number. Shit. Every. Time I plug my Iphone into my laptop to charge it, noton.y does iTunes kick off, so does iTunes Store and all the ****ing numbers transfer from one phone to the other. It's properly gripping my shit. These options should be enabled by the user not default. Why do apple think they know best? Just **** off and make us look for the functionality. iTunes has lost my media so many times now.
We had our heart set on an iMac but I'm seriously concerned that well be buying kit which might last longer but will seriously piss me off in the process.
iTunes is dogshit, iCloud is dogshit. Is everything else dogshit?
iTunes is beautiful. What are you on about? You'd rather use that 90's piece of junk windows media or what?
Disable iCloud if you don't use it. And your iphones are set up wrong. Ours don't do that lol
All I will say if I may wrecker, is that whilst the outlay may be dearer to begin with, you may save having to buy yourself another computer for 3 to 4 maybe even 5 years. That's worth something, and plus you get the best OS there is 🙂
OR) buy loads of bits for your pc, then face the possibility of either bungling the build and ruining the components, or being faced with the same problem a year down the line. Just don't discount macs straight off the bat because there are so many people slating them in this forum.
Thanks for the advice but my hesitancy is due to apple, not forum stuff. I love the hardware but I have to disagree; iTunes is dreadful. Between us, me and the wife have 2 iPods, 3 iPhones, an ipad, and an Apple TV. iTunes is the weakest link. We were going to go iMac but are seriously reconsidering.
Trouble is, if we want to keep the atv, the PC needs to go. They don't work happily together.
Sounds familiar Wrecker 🙂
As much of dislike of older windows (i had vista for long enough to download linux) Win 7 has caught up a lot.
In some ways I'd recommend 2 options. A Ubuntu box for those who want to just use e-mail and internet. It works solidly and is had to install bad things to it. Either that or setup the normal everyday account as Non Admin to stop people adding crap.
Win 7 has caught up with that and now prompts you whenever something is trying to do stuff. IE not always running in Admin mode.
Reading your post you seem to have Norton - GET RID OF IT!!! It's slow and clunky. Microsoft Security Essentials is better and slicker. As in previous posts look for the auto launch stuff and turn it off. Is there an Iphone setting for default connect as charge only? (Was on my old HTC Desire)
Generally the re install idea works here as you have got probably a lot of things trying to run all the time. Start from scratch and uncheck all the auto run stuff. If I plug something in that I want to use a program with I'll open the programme. Also when things like printers are installed you don't need the full suite of stuff just the drivers normally, same with cameras etc.
I find it functional and pleasing to the eye, not over complicated and all the preferences are easy to access. But fair enough if you dont like it 🙂 I don't work for apple by the way haha.
No offence wrecker, but that reads as if you've never spent the half hour you'd need to to learn your programs. That's not the computer or software's fault.
I use W7 at work and OSX at home and have to say I find W7 more reliable. I am tempted to reinstall my MBP with W7 and get rid of OSX.
Ok, final attempt.
How about a Lavi?

No it isn't....or rather it wasn't. v11 is a step in the right direction from the clutterfest, which arbitrarily broke Apple's own Human Interface Guidelines several times, that preceded it.
I don't understand why people argue so much about branded consumer goods.
Wrecker
To stop your wife seeing your stuff you need separate iCloud accounts, or turn the sync function off via system preferences (This will remove all the cloud stuff on your machine, take a back-up first).
When iTunes next opens when you plug your phone, select your phone in the sidebar and uncheck (tick switched off) the open iTunes when this phone is connected option towards the bottom/middle of the page.
If your machine will run it install iTunes 11 as there appears to have been some pruning behind the scenes, doesn't run on this G5 🙁
New 27s are available from the end of the month - I think the lack of drive is a mistake, people still use DVDs and CDs for sending files out, although sites like we transfer are reducing this now. We're ordering 9 for the studio so ill letchaknow how good or bad they are after xmas
In the meantime...
God that video is annoying. "heyur heyur heyur heyur heyur heyur and heyur. then heyur heyur heyur heyur heyur and heyur." ARGH STFU and take the thing apart!!
My 2 year old macbooks mini display port has just died, very common problem. 700 quid to replace....
hmmm...
I don't understand why people argue so much about branded consumer goods.
Yes. It's not as if it's going to make people change their minds and go and buy something else is it?
I also don't get the 'apple tax' argument, now I can understand that if you are poor then why pay more for a computer that isn't going to pay for itself.
But the 'tax' is paid for in a day, couple of days or week if it's helping you earn. It's a premium I happily pay.
The fact that PC's don't run the software I use very well (or at all) makes the decision easier. They are hideously ugly things too, I would quite happily leave an unused iMac in a living room but not a but ugly P.C.
My 3 month old MBP USB port has died ... hmmm (my 6 year old Dell laptop refuses to die, break or run slow). I know nowt about OS etc, but the MBP is way nicer to use from a 'premium feel' point of view.
And I'm being asked to get an imac for work ... hesitant Vs. cost but longevity appeals so interested to see how this thread goes ...
FFS not this again. Why are people who don't own or plan to buy Apple products so obsessed with them?
grum - MemberFFS not this again. Why are people who don't own or plan to buy Apple products so obsessed with them?
Ha, too true...the funniest/saddest thing is when you hear folk going on about Dyson vacuum cleaners though (and they really are s£%%^)!
As someone who isn't that computer savvy (I'm good enough to pick it up and train people on it, but I have no idea how it works) I'm always astonished when people complain about iTunes.
I used to have a basic MP3 player and used it with Media Player. It worked, but it was a bit faffy. Then I started using iTunes about 4 years ago with my first iPhone. Which just works. There's so little to actually DO to get it to work as well. I mean, you don't even have to plug the phone in with a wire any more FFS! 🙂 I put a cd in, click one button and it magically appears on the phone. That sort of thing.
I'm always truly baffled when people complain about iTunes. I really am. You know what, I think people piss around with it too much..... Leave it alone!
I downloaded iTunes 11 last night. Wowsers! That's fantastic. 🙂
I'm one of those that got sick of nursing PCs and laptops along to get them to work. I know Apple stuff is expensive, but I see where my money is being spent, it all looks and feels like a quality product to me. Not like the creaky plasticky Dell laptop (nearly £1000 worth new) I used to have, I think the value is in the quality and hopefully longevity. Last year I blew a load on a 27in iMac and it does exactly what I want: it sits there and when I sit down to use it, it's ready to work. It doesn't crash and its nice looking and uncluttered enough to sit in a corner and not get in the way. One wire, one screen, one keyboard and a trackpad. Lovely.
I look after my stuff. I'm on my 3rd iPhone (64gb iP5) and they've all lasted 2 years no bother and been worth good money come sale time. I dropped my nearly new phone and cracked the screen. I was quite ready to pay for a repair, but I was given a new one, no questions asked. Whilst I was in the store I had a quick play with an iPad mini. I don't need an iPad but the mini is such a lovely little jewel of a thing I decided to get one. So I sold some odds and sods I had lying around waiting for a rainy day and ordered one, which arrived yesterday a week faster than I was told it would.
So that's why I but Apple. It nice kit. It works as they say it does. And I cannot fault customer service like that. It's just a pity that more companies don't operate like Apple IMO 🙂
That's what I like about apple products, it's the same with Rapha. You get the added 'annoyance' value that winds up the have-nots. You can't put a value on that.
Because deep down they yearn for something better than their dell.FFS not this again. Why are people who don't own or plan to buy Apple products so obsessed with them?
Sorry but this seems far fetched to me :p if it's true - no biggie. Ring them and send it back for warranty repair. They might just send you a new one. Did you drop it? Unless there is a connection issue - usb ports don't just die. It's usually that some solder has fallen off or something. My 3 month old MBP USB port has died
On the issue of strength, my current MBP (2010) was dropped be me last year in a toilet cubicle. Was in my messenger bag, on a peg on the toilet door. The peg broke off and I watched helplessly with a mixture of toilet relief euphoria, and complete terror combined as my macbook plummeted to the ground and hit the concrete floor. It landed on it's corner and the aluminium body around the screen dog eared over the screen. Didn't crack, still closes, nothing broke. Simply amazing considering it dropped a good 5 or 6 feet onto reinforced concrete.
PP, exactly why I use Apple stuff, and have done since 1995.
Wrecker, a lot of your issues are because you are allowing it to happen, rather than taking a few minutes to switch a few options off and take control of it yourself. When I sync my iPhone, it syncs calendars, apps, books, contacts and photos. It does not sync music, because I want control over what tracks go on there. With my iPod, when I sync that, it automatically loads the latest music I've ripped into iTunes, and that's it. When I sync my iPad, it syncs calendars, contacts, apps and books, it has no music on it at all.
I have calendars and photos synced through iCloud, so that my Photostream is available on my pad at home as soon as I've taken photos on my phone, and I can see photos on my phone that have been copied onto my pad from my camera card. My books also sync so that when I'm reading a book in Kindle or iBooks, the book jumps to the last page I was reading on whatever device. I don't have any issues because I took a bit of time to set the various devices up the way I want them to play with each other.
I refuse to use iCloud for any music storage, partly because I'm a cheapskate and won't pay, but mostly because it only allows a certain amount of storage, and my current 144Gb is more than iCloud allows, plus it downgrades files to 256Kb, and mine are 350Kb, or whatever the bit rates are.
It's never a good idea to just accept the default settings on anything, be it a computer OS, a phone OS, or even a TV; taking time to carefully look at the settings and changing things will always give a better user experience, I spent an hour or so setting up my telly to get the picture the way I wanted it, longer than I spent setting up my Apple OS settings, even across three different devices.
I have to say there are lots of people who spend the cash on apple products without having an iota of knowledge about how they work, then blame the product saying blah blah blah it doesn't work, overpriced piece of crap blah blah.
Jamie - MemberiTunes 11 might change your mind.
Nope, it is still slow pile of junk that locks down all my music - and takes about 30seconds to start on an i3/6gb W7 laptop...poopy.
iTunes 11 installed on my MBP seems ok. Slight evolution and improvement of the UI. No plans to upgrade my PC version yet.
Certainly not revolutionary or worthy of heaped praise though...
Of course it's going to be slower on Windows, It's not made for Windows. It's made to run on mac OS's.W7 laptop
I just timed it - 58 seconds to open!
I recently sold a couple of iMacs (24'', apprix 5 yrs old for a reasonable price (to someone off here). The Sony Viao I bought at the same time for around the same price - pretty much worthless.
Just timed it on mine matt - 4.8 seconds.
Decided I'm not going to get an imac. Going to get a 15" mbp with i7 instead. Can't afford the Retina version right now unfortunately 🙁
I don't think the retina is user serviceable so not a bad choice to give it a miss. The standard displays are great - even better if you use them outside as all you can see is the handsome devil that purchased it 😯
Depends what your planned use is but the i7 may not be worth it either.
I wouldn't go for the upgraded mem or SSD versions as these can be upgraded more cost effectively and without voiding the warranty. Have a look at the crucial site for both and don't go higher than 8GB.
Just timed it on mine matt - 4.8 seconds.
Oh! Oh! Let me try!
About 2.5 seconds to open. (27in 1 year old iMac with a bit of extra RAM)

Yeah I wont mess around with anything other than processor. Good to know about the retina display not being serviceable! ta for that
Are we timing opening of iTunes here?
0.9 of a second on an Air with 8gig Ram if we are.

Why no higher than 8GB? I was using all 16GB of my ram on my 2012 MBP last night while working on some gopro video.
my nice new 15r MBP does its job perfectly without any dicking around. That is all.

Yeah, I re did it yesterday after my computer had been on a while and it was 1.6 seconds so I really don't know what people are on about saying it's slow.

Because the half a#se version that they made for windows is rubbish and slow and memory hungry. In this case the 2 options are spend a stupid amount and replace all your windows PC's with Macs to make 1 program work properly or for them to build it properly. I guess apple favour the former.
