Trying to help a friend out.

She has 'inherited' her late husband's fish pond with I think around 30 or so fish. She has mobilty issues and isn't able to manage the upkeep really so I said I'd try and find some pointers of where to go and who to ask about how to safely move the fish on to another keen fish pond person.

Is there any value in the fish?

Absolutely clueless with this.

Cheers.

Try contacting your local fish keeping groups or Facebook, what area are they in ? I look after a couple of ponds in South Worcestershire area and use a local aquatic place . There will definitely be some to buy the Koi .

It really depends on the quality and size, I had Japanese Koi which I had from young but I just put them up for rehousing.

If you want to move them on you need big bags and a way to get compressed air into the bag.

You could eBay them. I gave mine away to a good home and I was a member of the forum below which has a for sale section. You could join and ask for advise.

jca, you're a one eh 🙂

Thanks guys, I'll have a look, I don't think the Ebay route is one she'd like to do. Probably more of a rehoming with a donation but I'll pass on all the info to her.

There's a couple of big bugers, 3' long I've noticed!

Kent area.

I cleared and closed my pond last year and went down the Ebay route. First buyer took a few, then never came back for the rest saying that he'd had pond issues. Re-listed and they went to a guy who turned up with a van with aeration system, fully prepared. He sent me photos of their new home too - so get the feeling they're living a happy life.

Was a total lottery though, and as to value -even without knowing what was in the pond, I pulled in £500  - I could have got a lot more too but needed a quick sale as a garden room was replacing the pond. I had a mix of Japanese koi and some mirrors.

Don't underestimate how much effort and equipment you need to move large ones.

I used to fish a lake in Essex with some big koi and koi hybrids after someone had emptied their pond fish into the lake.

Certainly made spotting the fish much easier when you see a group of 20lb gold fish swimming around.

We had similar, moving house and had to clear Koi out of a garden pond, gave them to a mate of a mate who had loads, he came with industrial barrels in a transit and cleared them out into these barrels. Best bet these days is facebook, either marketplace or in forums, there's always some page for rehoming fish in certain areas, just search for rehoming fish and pick the nearest ones to list.

Thanks folks, it's not going to be easy, if it happens at all at the moment.

I keep Koi. If you could get a quick snap of the fish I may be interested or at least tell you if they are likely to be worth much. I assume the pond is getting shut down also so maybe get a pic of the equipment, filters, air pumps, uv's etc. That stuff can be worth a bit depending what it is.

Thanks papa, I will mention this when I see her. It would be a complete clear out of everything if she agrees to it.
