Annoyingly realised that the gov.Uk advice is incorrect and airlines (I’m flying Ryanair) insist you have 6 months FROM ARRIVAL (I only have 5 1/2 months left).

So they check passport dates at the boarding gate? I think that’s the only time it’s checked before Spanish customs.

Very expensive holiday possibly going in the toilet.

Flew to the US c 15 years ago with just under 5 months left on mine. Only alerted to it by immigration at LAX who suggested I might want to renew it if I planned to return soon. As I was flying out for work about once a month at short notice at the time, it got me a day in London (on work time) while I sorted a new passport out.

I really should have clarified: Post Brexit changes on 1/1/21 and into Europe.

Trying to work out how closely Ryanair staff at the gate check dates on your passport, and so my chances of winging it.

The UK FCDO website can be incorrect / out of date. The airline will see the Timatic info which you can check yourself here: https://www.iatatravelcentre.com/passport-visa-health-travel-document-requirements.htm

You could have an issue if the passport is actually over 10 years old.

Having recently flown with Ryanair, they didn't check my passport very carefully, they're more interested in your boarding pass and that you've got all the correct Covid related paperwork. It's passport control who will look closely but I don't know if they'll care, assuming you have a flight booked back prior to it expiring then I can't see an issue

I've flown to Europe with less than 6 months as I was going to be back before it ran out but when I flew to Africa I needed a new one as they wouldn't accept it

Yeah, to ROI with less 3 weeks left on it (I was there for a week)

Raised eyebrows on the passport check but I was told them when I was going home and they were fine. Can't remember if it was a Ryan air or aer lingus flight. This was in 2008 though so not exactly recent...

ROI didn’t count it’s part of the common travel area had one of a group I was with travel back on a uni library card after he lost his passport. One of my wife’s friends got turned away last week for this exact reason and it 9 1/2 months from the issue date. Not 6 months from the expiry date.

I got refused boarding at check in to Abu Dhabi once because I had less than 6 mo.

I was made up about not having to go until I called into work and they told me to board the next flight to Dubai and take a taxi over.

Turns out the blanket advice for UAE was 3 mo (which I checked), but Abu Dhabi has its own rule.

So yeah they do check.

Every country has different requirements. For entry into Schengen the following applies. Ryanair might have a different 'rule' but I would hope *if* they pick up it you can quote this page. A 'valid' travel document is a passport issued within 10 years, and it must be valid 3 months from your intended date of departure. The 'expiry date' given by the UK isn't necessarily it's valid period. If in doubt,

http://www.exteriores.gob.es/portal/en/serviciosalciudadano/informacionparaextranjeros/paginas/requisitosdeentrada.aspx

"Being in possession of a valid passport or travel document
The document must be valid for at least three months following the projected exit from the territory of the Members States, and must have been issued within the last ten years. "

Africa's a big place, it's even got it's own continent with 54 different countries ...more countries than Europe 😉

My cousin could not fly last week because one of their children's passports only had 5 months left (going to Italy I think).

We only realised our youngest lad's passport expired whilst we were due to be in France on the way down to the tunnel last year. Chanced it and got in and out (with a 3 week out of data passport) just fine via the tunnel both ways. Not even a disapproving nod!
