Been looking at a campervan converted from a VW Crafter.
Anyone got one?
Any problems to look out for?
Btw it's a 2006 109 hp version
Thanks
They're basically a Merc Sprinter so the usual rust problems and pikey's will keep trying to steal the exhaust for the CAT.
109hp sounds very underpowered in a van that size, we have a transporter at 180bhp and that's ok, although I suspect Pendal Performance could remap it to something useful for £400.

i've got a 2006 lt35 with the 109 engine and to be honest its a big van so its not going to ever feel quick, good enough cruise all day at 65-70 , not too bad on fuel either.
loads more room than a T4/T5 and much cheaper 🙂

Yes 🙂 I am have a mwb high top that I am half way trough turning into a camper. Not had any Big problems with it yet just a few small things but it was a van from a builder before i got it so had to fix a few things, plus a bit of rust that i need to sort. Mines the 109 and as said will sit at 65-70 all day long and gets about 400 to a tank if you Are steady.
I had a T5 before and this is a big van so I have found out that it costs a bit more to do due to the size, but it's worth it for the space and to stand up in side
Here is a link to my build if you want some ideas.

for interest.... how much does it cost to fill the tank (planning to replace my old shape 208cdi SWB low roof sprinter one day - that does 450 to a tank and costs about £120 to fill)
Thanks
Any major issues eg dpf, clutch, egr ......?
did my research last year when buying a van, Crafters were near top of my list.
EGR's and DPF/regen were the common things I kept reading about, there is somewhere that does a DPF delete for £400.
Slightly more sensible priced 2nd hand than Sprinters but didnt find the spec we wanted so bought a Transit instead.
I wouldn't worry too much about bhp, my Iveco is a similar size and runs about at 3 tons and it only has 120bhp and is fairly nippy.
I'm on the lookout for a newer version with a 150-180bhp engine but only as it spends 90% of its time towing a 3 ton trailer which understandably turns it into a bit of a dog, and leaves 5th gear out of reach!

Crafter build
Beanie, been watching your build thread, very neat with the inside bike mount 🙂
And the BBQ point too..
only issue with mine is there is no room inside for bikes...
Might need to rejig my rear end to sort that out ...
I've got one too, pretty solid vans. Engines aren't quite as nice as the merc options and apart from some trim bits they're the only bits that changes between sprinter and crafter (all made in the same factory in spain).
Rust is an issue on them, less so with metallic colours but you still need to keep on top of it. Nice enough to drive and parts aren't silly. You could do a lot worse! Remaps are easy too, mine was 150quid and now runs about 145bhp which makes it much nicer to be in and it doesn't use any more fuel.
DPF is now a testable item on the MOT, if it had one it won't pass if it's not there.
Torque > HP
Peak figures are meaningless without knowing the curve, averages are far more important.
Remove dpf, take big crowbar, use crowbar to knock centre out of dpf, replace dpf, still all good for mot.
😀
Haven't put anymore than £100 in mine yet but I would think its the same size tank as yours, 80 litter I think. The crafter has countdown bars with I haven't worked out yet instead of a normal fuel gauge.
Thanks, should get a good chunk of the inside done this weekend. My bikes are going in the rear and standing up on there ends just inside the doors
Sounds quite good up to now
Thanks
Proper vans are not like a dinky t5 the headline bhp figure is not as much an issue
My old Renault master lh35 ( long high ) was only 120 bhp but was more than ample
After all a proper van is not a car and won't handle as such
Just go test one to see if it suits you

Provided they notice. But I'm pretty sure my decat is an MOT failure and nobody bats an eyelid
How does the size compare with the transit? Hopped into a brand new one a month ago and it felt narrow in comparison.
As for the BS about not enough power my old transit was the 75 model, fairly gutless but would still sit at 70 on the motorway on all bar the biggest of hills. It's a van not a hot hatch.
If they are like the old model sprinter, they are narrower outside but usable width inside is similar to a Transit as the depth of the structure/ribs inside the skin is lower profile.
Steelsreal - nice van
"DPF is now a testable item on the MOT, if it had one it won't pass if it's not there."
Dave , whats their test then ..... Would it be the old " oh look over there , thats the dpf" and thats why folks are doing a roraring trade in cutting a discrete hole on the top side , removing internals and patchinf it back up 😉
Then passes the "oh looks theres a dpf" test.....
