May be of interest to anyone that has a kid at uni looking for a little cash.

I'm working at a FinTech co looking for an ad-hoc App tester. Basic requirements are literate, technical, iPad owner and good at puzzles. The role will cover basic functional testing of new features / releases on a single iOS App. It's basically following series of instructions manually to try and get the App to crash or function incorrectly.  They do not need to be able to code or run automated tests, although we can train and scale up the role based on the profile of the person. Ideally someone on a comp sci or technical course but open.

The catch is that it's ad hoc, likely max 1 day a week to start. The work can be done out of hours and split up around lectures as required. We will pay the Nat Living wage for 23 & over regardless of age and support over Slack / Zoom. DM for details if of interest, prefer to stay semi anon in open forum.

Cheers

I don't have anyone who meets those requirements, but why on earth wouldn't you automate those tests?

We will pay the Nat Living wage

oh now it makes sense.

We do, but this is to run alongside. I thought the compensation was fair for the level of expertise, experience and commitment required (basically none). If the person is interested we can introduce them to automation but it's not expected.

I'm not looking for a cheap full-time QA. This is simply an opportunity for someone that wants to pad out their CV and gain a little commercial experience while at uni and expectations are firmly in line with that.

I will send you a message as my son will be interested in this.  He is in his first year at Uni on a software engineering course.

@5Lab that's a bit cynical. This sounds like an amazing opportunity for someone to get relevant industry experience during term time.

Bar work or other alternatives usually pay minimum wage don't they?

I've shared the role with all who have expressed interest to date.

Regarding the cynicism, I will acknowledge that many companies pull students into unpaid internships and get them to be tea boys/girls essentially and do low-skill work that has little value to future employers. Anyone who has wasted a summer like this will have faced great annoyance. It often happens at big-name companies and startups and is not always intentional (e.g. the recruiting manager leaves co before the intern joins, and no one knows what to do with them when they are there). It's 100% right to do due diligence before taking any role, even as a student.

I've added sections to the role description explaining:

- How will this role augment automated testing, and why we take on students.

- Provided some background on how our previous ad hoc and interns have faired after working with us.

If anyone's kid joins and feels the role was exploitative in any way, I'm very happy for them to come and bad-mouth me on STW 🙂
