You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
It's phone upgrade time, which is lucky because mine's not great.
I'm looking at the Sony W995- I don't know much about phones but this one's appealed to me because it has a better camera than my actual camera so I can take less on rides, it's chunky and it's alledged it has GPS.
The GPS is the main thing- can you use it as a sat nav in your car easily? I'm on Orange and it seems like a very useful thing to have rather than borrowing a Tom Tom. I assume it's free to use and doesn't need internet?
Nokia maps are free but I am not sure if there is a Sony equivalent. I found it good when I used it. Sportstracker can be useful too.
Just becuase the camera has more pixels doesn't make it better.
I'm aware that it's only digital zoom, but because it's not got the resolution of a sponge I think I'd actually use it.
I have one- it's early days so I can't say much yet re:GPS apart from it does have one. Sound quality is impressive if you are into that sort of thing, but like you, I wanted it for the camera. For a mobile phone this 8.1 mp camera is very impressive.
It comes with various apps. inc. 'Tracker', and googlemaps. It will also act as a SatNav.
I have downloaded 'Endomono' but not tried it yet.
I've had a W995 for ~6months now, and upgreded from it predecessor the W910i because it's good at what it does, playing music (Great battery life) Internet browsing if you get Opera browser Email and genral being an actual phone not a PDA/Laptop.
The camera is 8.1mp but it really isn't the quality of a proper digital camera, but if it's only for 'out on the ride shots' it's good enough.
There is then an inbuilt app that'll let you upload your photos (individually) to Facebook or a blog via MMS. At £0.35 a MMS message you might give that a miss and opt to use the easy to set up inbuilt Email for such things.
As of the 'Get rid of the TomTom GPS' It's A-GPS, meaning that Google maps route planner is good but requires a good internet connection to download the maps and doesn't speak the directions like the Nav Software.
Mine did come with Navigation software in the location services menu, it ain't great but will get you there.
Thanks Ambrose for the heads up about Endomono.
I also have a W995 (did have a C905) and really rate it.
It's strong, small, good camera (for a phone), has wifi and works as a phone too.
I'd say the GPS is pretty average though - good for running or riding tracking but I find the car satnav pretty poor.
Oh and it's got a torch too!
I've a SE Satio which has Google maps on it, takes awesome pics and video thanks to the 12 mp camera, had it for 6 months now no issues.
