You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
following recent threads, will be ordering a new car in next few days and surprised that mrs iainc and juniors reckon that [s]jobby[/s] 'java brown' is the 'cool colour' to have now.
I have always associated brown with beige and grandparents 🙂
Looking around it does, indeed, seem to be a growing trend.....not sure I am ready to embrace that yet !
so who has a brown car, and let's see it in its turd resembling grandness ... 🙂
Does it have a vinyl roof?
^^^ 🙂 err, no...
Are you leasing ? If so, knock yourself out.
If it's your own money bear in mind you'll get f$%k*d at sale / trade-in time as it'll be horribly unfashionable by then.
^^yeah, it's on a PCP so will be handing it back after 4 yrs.
That Capri is quite retro cool 🙂
I looked at one in a Volvo garage at the weekend.
Just looked like a massive metallic jobbie.
A friend of mine has one; we all call it the poo car. Ours is a sophisticated form of humour.
I had a shite brown Daf33 variomatic back in the late 80s- I bought it for the novelty value as it was so uncool (and only £100)
Nowadays ... Nah but having said that I though white was so cool mid eighties and then very uncool up until recently and I would consider one
Brown? Nope
i saw a metalic brown berlingo and thought .... nice colour.
I saw the self same car resplendant in road grime and it looked like a giant turd.
I wouldn't buy one because i never clean my cars 😀
I had an old Peugeot 306 that was described as metallic brown but just looked light gold to me.
No!
yes, keep 'em coming so I can send her this thread 🙂
Sales of brown cars are in massive decline - it was 'retro,' it came back, it's dead.
Guaranteed to make any car look like shit.
Friends always referred to my car as beige:
I like crappy colours such as the OP's, means cheaper cars for me down the line. Currently rocking a gold car. Makes me sick just to look at it but saved a fair chunk when we got it.
you see, I think that Range Rover colour is actually really nice...maybe I am a lost cause 🙂
My current car is grey, previous was dark blue....

Its very fashionable, but like anything very fashionable, it will go out of fashion and then people will laugh at it!
agreed, but they said that about white cars, what, 5 or 6 years ago, and they still seem to be most popular colour for new ones...
My grandad had a "Russett Brown" Austin Allegro. Which says all I need to know about brown cars.
He reckoned it would hide the dust and dirt. In hindsight, I think they just put too many letters in 'russett'.

Surely the most popular colour is silver? I've been looking at new cars lately and the colour choice is invariably one each of white, black, blue, red, and 37 different variations of metallic grey. It's like we've turned into a nation of John Majors.
johndoh
Oi! I had that car as a teen in the early 1980's and it's bronze, not brown. It's a fine example of the classic Ford Capri mark II. I had a much nicer, wider set of wheels on mine (but no furry dice).
However, brown cars do always make me think of the Austin All-Aggro which my dad showed an interest in when i was living back at home.
We persuaded him against it and got a nice mk III 2L Cortina instead.
Had one of these as my first car
Snap!
1.3 litres of twin-choke carb understeer mayhem.
@DezB - that was my childhood that was. Stolen from me, hiding out of sight of friends, in the back of an Austin Princess HLS in this striking and memorable colourway. 😐

The delightful "Harvest Gold", aka crapatini brown, my first car was a mini clubman estate in that fetching shade...sadly no vinyl roof for me.
I previously had a brown 1990 Ford Fiesta named "Jobby".
@mattoutandabout - really? you were ashamed of the Princess?? I think we had a tan Maxi at about that time. Company car... We thought it was fab!

totally agree on the :
based on our wanderings of showrooms and forecourts in recent weeks. That's what is probably giving the thought of something a bit different 🙂 Having been driving a 'space grey' estate for 4 yrs, and a 'indigo blue' one for the same before that, I thought different would be good, and I don't really like black or white.white, black, blue, red, and 37 different variations of metallic grey
Brown though...... we'll see !
*adds bikebouy to the list*
could be very like this :
that's just a beach with very uniformly coloured stones on it?
My T25 will be getting brown lace stripes soon, if that counts.
The Capri and the Range Rover aren't really brown, they're a shade of gold or bronze, to be a proper brown the colour really has to be a flat colour, not metallic.
The Princess in Matt's photo above is, I understand, commonly known as 'baby-shit brown'.
I used to drive my dad's Volvo 244 GL, which was a fetching shade of dark brown; I tended to 'drive it like I stole it', fairly safe in the knowledge that nobody would notice a dark brown featureless box on wheels. 😉
The first car I remember the mother having was a brown metro.
Don't get that.
Love the Grinall....
hate the received wisdom that you must buy a certain colour in order for resale value. It's basically a handful of car journos telling everyone what to think, the same as how if you're selling your house, it MUST be magnolia as the stupidd buyers won't be able to imagine anything if it's not magnolia. Brown cars look fine and you'll stand out from the sea of silver and white cars.
Having said that, bikebouy - X1s are awful, get another XC60 😉
If it helps OP any metallic brown car is referred to in our house as "dog poo by moonlight".
I am not exactly at the cutting edge of fashion though 😀
Tonprove the point ... I've owned one brown/beige car - a Triumph Acclaim with a brown interior. This will give you a clue just how 8) I have been.
Well the scimitar makes the brown look good
Vw less so
well, I must thank STW again, resourceful in not only bike fettling guidance, health issues and general life, but in showing my loved ones the cruel reality of life with a jobby coloured car 🙂
They have relented and it will not be brown !
Further to my Austin Princess exterior shots, I would like to share these with you. I do remember he rear seat being huuuuuuuge, especially as the previous cars had been a Renault 4 and Fiat Amiga, with three of us in the back.

Check out the carpet.
i work in higher education philanthropy...one of our donors who owned a company that is a bit of a household name and he has significant wealth...he drives a chocolate brown rolls royce phantom...its absolutely gopping
No longer mine unfortunately...

Nice reg plate.
They have relented and it will not be brown !
Aah! Shame. I bet it was the Beetle on the first page that did it. Actually looks like a slimy poo that one.
^^^ I think it took most of the first page to get them to see the light 🙂
In the epitome of of current car blandness I have just ordered one in grey 🙂
Just past a new fancy jag in Tesco car.
My 8 year old daughter remarked.
"would you like a metallic poop coloured car?"
I had to laugh thinking of this thread.
n.b. There was no mention of it being a nice car or anything.
When [s]we were[/s] my wife was looking at Civics, we saw a deep metallic golden brown one, I thought it looked lovely, deep and glossy.
I asked the dealer about it just to wind her up, as we were struggling, unsurprisingly, to find the higher spec she wanted in the budget 'Milano red', essentially a downgraded paint finish.
Surprisingly, he tried to put me off by saying how hard they were to sell, and how much he had to stake off the screen price on the last one, I'm standing there nodding and thinking there must be a good deal coming, meanwhile my wife was walking back to the our car!
