Interested in whether it feels up to the job day to day and when fully laden (e.g. roof rack of bikes + passengers and luggage).

On paper the 2.0Tdi probably makes marginally more sense against my annual mileage (15-20k) but the lighter fizzier engine is appealing to my preference for petrol engines.

Would be a manual box for me.

Thanks

Plenty pokey enough. Is a genuinely quick motor. Even better in DSG and ACC form.

But if you're doing >15k miles, why consider against the equivalent diesel?

1.4tsi 150bhp here in Oct estate, 3 bikes 3 blokes trips away - plenty fast enough and averaging 49mpg over 3 years.

To muddy the waters, I've just gone from octavia 2.0tdi 150 to karoq 1.6tdi 115, both manual.
I do 20k+ p.a. mostly motorway and A roads. When the 2.0 was run in (30k+) it was a beast of an engine. By the end I was easily getting 60-65mpg and it's pretty pokey. Didn't actually like the car too much though.
Decided to swap down to the 1.6, and I've been very pleasantly surprised. It's just 3k old, economy isn't great (48-50mpg) but it'll run in. Flexibility isn't great in the gears (should have gone for the dsg). The car is much better than the Octy though - very happy with it (I lease). Rapid it is not, but it is surprisingly "ok".
If I was looking at small capacity engines again, I would go auto box.

Rich S interesting on the dsg/auto.
I have dsg at the minute and have a love/dislike (wouldn't go as far as hate!) Relationship with it.

Any particular reason based on your experiences?

Petrol has some appeal despite mileage because the nature of our car use sometimes means a few days of slow stop start driving and we face years of 50mph restrictions along our usual motorway route. Finding with the current car that it is regenerating much more often because it's usual get it hot 5 days a week run has been strangled!

Dsg because of the (lack of) in gear flexibility. I think that box was originally designed for small capacity engines too (source is my failing memory).

Let's face it, the roads are busy and "making progress" difficult. Adaptive cruise is mostly great, and the idea of plonking the box in "drive" and letting the car get on with it sounds good. Particularly on 50-ish motorways and A roads in queues of caravans.

I did once drive a 1.4tsi scirocco with it and didn't get on with the flappy paddles so just left it in auto, which was much more relaxing!

Understood on the diesel regen point. No faff with the 1.5.

I'd use the cash you save on the diesel to get another DSG.

It is so easy with ACC. Makes traffic jams and long slow speed restrictions a joy.

Some models even come with free flappy paddles if you want the manual override.

To put your mind at rest, we've just got a 1.0 TSI in an Octy estate and it's fine. Not quick, but never feels out gunned. New small(er) capacity engines are very good indeed.

The 1.5 in our Karoq is more than rapid and same motor will be fine in the Superb (and Passat obvs).

If you're looking at new / lease, check lead times with the dealer. When I got an Octavia just over a year ago, it was three weeks' wait for the 2.0 diesel and several months if I wanted a petrol.

How do you know when a diesel is doing it's regenerate thing? I've no idea when mine is.

Octy 1.5 tsi dsg acc here. Came from a 2.2 mazda diesel with similar hp. The Octy is obviously less torquey but I got massively fed up with the regen and oil change requirements of the mazda, so in that regard its a joy to own. The dsg is well suited to the engine and gives plenty enough poke for everyday driving. I'm getting low 40s real world mpg, but it does get knocked into "S" mode now and again.

I have a 2018 Superb with one of the last 1.4Tsi 150 engines. Very happy with power, driveability, and MPG.

There has been some issues raised regarding the new 1.5TSi being hesitant/kangerooing when pulling away in 1st with a cold engine. Whether this is the internet magnifying a minor problem with a small percentage of the engines who knows. But if buying second hand, nearly new maybe worth ensuring any test drive starts with a cold engine.

I went from the 1.4 in a yeti to the 1.5 in an Octavia estate just before Christmas. I get the kangaroo thing sometimes setting off. I've also had issues with the stop start killing the engine when pulling out of a junction. The yeti never did this. Plenty of power and good economy. Quiet too.

How do you know when a diesel is doing it’s regenerate thing? I’ve no idea when mine is.

Usual symptoms on a VW DSG
- holds gears a lot longer eg will sit in third at 30-35 for 20 seconds before shifting up
- rough idle at higher revs (800 usual, 1000-1100 for regenerating)
- auto stop start is disabled
- trip fuel consumption drops by about 2-5mpg very quickly (even on a longer run)
- park up in the middle and it smells worse than me after a gym session and the fans run on for ages (you can feel the extra heat being dissipated around the car).
- it feels "stuffed up" during in gear acceleration and throttle response is worse.

Thanks for all the other thoughts folks including on delivery dates.

I got an Octavia 1.5tsi (manual) just before Xmas. Interesting to see other people mention the kangarooing. It's not a big thing, but my wife keeps taking the p!ss when i kangaroo away from traffic lights. Can't believe it doesn't happen when she drives!! I kinda thought it might be something to do with always driving on eco mode?

Getting 38mpg average since first getting it. We've done 1000 miles and it's mostly around town type stuff.

It's great on the m-way though. And ACC is a must!!

My wife has the 1.5TSI in a Karoq. Mpg around town mid 30's and a long run high 40's. Properly quick, well for me coming from a transporter! but I wish we'd gone for the diesel.I just don't plain like the lack of pull from it, and I suspect when fully loaded ( bikes and roof box) it will struggle. If it was for me, doing high miles, and a lease( so not to worry about moving it on in 3 years) I'd go 2.0TDI every time, but it's not so......

Oh, and it does that Kangarooing thing! When it went into the dealership for a recall awhile ago, I mentioned this to the service guy. He told me he'd never heard of this. I went and sat down, and another customer leaned over and told me he'd just informed the chap of the same complaint! The VW quality shines through in every part of the group.

1.5tsi manual Karoq just about to hit 16k miles. Often its just me but for trips away it has canoe & sea kayak on the roof and bikes on the tow bar plus all the luggage for 2+dog.

I can from a volvo v60 D4 and I do miss the torque but you only really talking about that at licence loosing speeds. Around town and normal motorway speeds its fine even fully loaded.

One downside it the tank is only 50ltrs which means I seem to be filling it up twice a week whilst I could normal stretch the volvo to once a week.

Never heard or felt the kangarooing thing but maybe just lucky.

From another forum talking about the Arteon 1.5tsi dsg......

I used to have a 2012 2 litre tfsi quattro and it was fast and great fun to drive but I as hard as a tried I could never get above 30 mpg on a long run. My usual commute used to see 26mpg and I was constantly at the pump.

The Arteon gets away with the smaller engine because its not a car you want to drive fast, its a car you want to waft around in. The suspension is brilliant, it soaks up bumps and imperfections on the road. The ride is super smooth and the gearbox does a great job at slushing the gears and getting the most out the engine so its don't feel underpowered when on the move.

That being said when you really want to make progress (merging on a motorway or trying to make a gap) and have to work the engine hard you really do notice its lack of capacity. It makes a loud rumble as it goes up the rev range and doesn't really go anywhere fast.. its not slow but its just not what I'm used to. Certainly doesn't pin you in your seat when you press the loud pedal.

I've been getting a lift to work in a 1.5 petrol Karoq with DSG and it's a pretty good engine, nippy and still knocking out the same 150 psi as my 2 litre diesel.

Hi all just popped back to say thanks for all the comments after a busy few days. From comments I'm wavering back towards diesel and maybe a dsg again.
