I’m trying to work out how some international postage is charged. I have a spreadsheet that I probably can’t share, it’s also locked down.

Anyway I have a rate per kg of £5.692 and an item rate of £1.607. That gives me an item price of £3.02. When I change the item weight in grams the item price changes.

if that makes sense does anyone know that maths behind it? No worries if not as appreciate it’s Friday.

thanks

So your package is 248g?

5.692 x weight + 1.607

Item price = (item weight (kg) x £5.692) + £1.607

Thanks very much, you might have saved me a lot of data entry!

cougar officially it was 249 but imagine it rounds the decimal.

It’s more arithmetic than maths?

Given its shipping rates it's more likely to be misdirection and robbery.

I'm rusty on this stuff, but I'm pretty sure that arithmetic is part of the field of mathematics. Without addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, I don't thing the other parts of maths work.

The OP got the answer they needed, it's a perfect opportunity to celebrate the win and not get into a pointless argument, although then we of course need to question the purpose of this forum and more over the internet as a whole 😉

Pointless Argument should be the forum name not ‘chat’.

It's not pointless. Mathematics is the foundation of science. Our world was built on science. Take that away, where will we end up?

It means you missed the point. I was not talking about the maths I was commenting that arguments ensue even when an answer is given. And be careful about who you call an idiot.

Nope, but I'm eternally hopeful we can get this place to a civil state, because if we can't then what hope does the rest of the world stand, *looks briefly at news headlines* Ohhhh, goes back to listening to Frightened Rabbit, because that'll cheer up my afternoon, ooohhhh.

FWIW there's plenty of branches of maths that don't go near arithmetic, and you need them to prove that 1+1=2 in the first place. But most people are (quite rightly) happy to assume that arithmetic works and can be trusted without needing to prove it from first principles.

Is that backed up by any evidence or are you just changing the subject to avoid talking about maths?

it's definitely more my kind of maths than multidimensional stochastic processes, say, or algebraic invariants of topological spaces. So there's that.

Before this spins off into (an albeit potentially interesting) discussion of Maths vs Arithmetic, vs basis for all known pies, I read this from the OP as asking 'When I change the item weight in grams the item price changes'

Perhaps there is a scaled item standing charge for weight bands?

Oh, we will meet, you can count on it, and I will call you an idiot.

BTW. Where do you live?

Ireland

Which sounds like a lovely place, but I've never been tempted to visit on grounds of, if it was so lovely, why did so many Irishmen leave for better fortunes abroad? But if you want to meet somewhere desirable, I'm free anytime. I'm not going to go to Ireland to argue with idiots.

I started a degree in Mathematics in the mid-90’s. One of the first modules was whether one could be one, and is nought really nought (or something very similar, it's been 30 years).

I didnt last, I was expecting lots of equations and formulae, which I liked. I did one term, then finished. I was totally mis-sold. Apparently, engineering would have been better for me, and, at the time, I thought engineering was metal bashing and turning stuff on a lathe. I had a lot to learn!

Just like the apocryphal six phases of a big project ending in punishment of the innocent and reward for the uninvolved, it seems that even a seemingly innocuous subject on the STW forum, will quickly deteriorate through tedious debate about a tangential issue (Maths vs Arithmetic), through shoehorned political comments (Brexit), to all out hostility (Call me an idiot to my face).

Hopefully it's all made worthwhile by an occasion flash of wit (Popcorn anyone . . . how much is the postage).

I keep a private list. I don’t call idiots out in public, I save it for later.

As some day it may happen that a victim must be found
I've got a little list — I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground
And who never would be missed — who never would be missed!
There's the pestilential nuisances who write for autographs —
All people who have flabby hands and irritating laughs —
All children who are up in dates, and floor you with 'em flat —
All persons who in shaking hands, shake hands with you like that —
And all third persons who on spoiling tête-á-têtes insist —
They'd none of 'em be missed — they'd none of 'em be missed!

[Chorus]
He's got 'em on the list — he's got 'em on the list;
And they'll none of 'em be missed — they'll none of 'em be missed

America?

Oh, and with reference to the original question, no, I’m not. I can never get a calculator to produce a percentage of something that makes sense! I have the numerical equivalent of dyslexia, I can understand the actual numbers but when it comes to doing anything with them, I’m stuffed.

This place gets more entertaining by the day. Person asks for help with mathematics issue. Thread turns in to argument about mathematics versus arithmetic with science thrown in for good measure and two middle aged middle schoolers dishing out vague threats.

I’ll chip in a tenner toward them meeting up. They can have a maths off or throw empty insults at each other. If it gets intense they may result to pushing and windmilling

basis for all known pies

Base + sides + lid = pie

No base? No sides? Not pie.
