Just caught up with the rest of the GnR. Yes it does improve a little once he swaps mich’s. They are musically very good.

oh and thanks for the comment about the camera changes every 2 seconds, I couldn’t see past that after reading that !

Slash doesn’t look like he’s had a wash or changed his clothes since I last saw him in the 90’s !

And let’s not dress this up. Guns N Roses were god awful. Erratic performance this, incredible they’re still going that, blah, blah. They were awful.

I love rock music, have a concert history from Diamond Head and Magnum to Metallica and ZZ Top, stopping off at AC/DC, Alice Cooper and Marillion on the way plus a whole load of similar stuff over the years.

Agreed on GnR. Terrible sound balance, not a great choice of tracks and the performance itself a bit meh.

I liked Maneskin and the ChurnUps

Norman smashed it our of the park !!

Came here to say this but was beaten to it

”FBS dropping Maxi and Faithless into the mix was an awesome moment.”

I’ll be treating the neighbours to a full on reply with all the doors and windows open later

Just catching up on Kevin McCloud’s set from last night.

From the sets I’ve seen it’s probably my favourite so far, as above well honed.

Apparently Axl’s vocals were much clearer if you were actually there which maybe explains why they didn’t just turn the volume up!

According to the missus Axl’s vocals were not clear at all. She was there in a very good spot. In fact, she’s a GNR fan and has seen them a fair few times but she left half way through the set. I had quite a few disgruntled texts from her last night!

I saw Axl fronting AC/DC a couple of years ago and was really impressed with his singing.

Maybe Angus growled something about turning up to sound check before the gig.

And perhaps that’s why GnR turned up on stage at the allotted time last night.
They weren’t on time for the gig, they were just very late for sound check.

LDR was 75% through an absolutely amazing set when she got cut off by the other stage curfew. I know it was her fault but really Glastonbury? GnR we’re still performing so it can hardly have been noise!

The crowd was massive, bigger than for GnR and there was a lot of disappointment not to hear the last songs which would have topped an already epic show from her.

I mean I get the demographic at glasto is middle aged but  most of the bands playing should have been put to pasture years ago. I love the Manics and they did a good set but it’s pretty much identical to when I saw them in the 90s. Same goes for Lightning Seeds, Texas, Foo Fighters and as for GnR… they were just an embarrassment - would have been better just to have Slash doing a solo spot earlier in the bill.

I guess AM have developed musically but they were just too knackered unfortunately and didn’t put the pedal down enough.

Not an epic year so far really - they need to take more risks with headliners and not cut the friggin power in the middle of one of the best sets this year!

If I could “Like” a post, @winston 👍

I guess most of the decent new stuff is on the smaller stages? I find I’m embarrassed for them when I see the old hasbeen punks on stage. It’s grim to see the “youth music” that I loved played by old codgers!

Glastonbury FACTS

Headliners will be disappointing.

They will also divide opinion on whether they should have been there in the first place.

Folk will complain the organisers don’t take enough risks with the bill these days.

Other folk will point out they never did.

There will be a gem of a performance somewhere - it will not be near the top of the bill.

Pop folk will suggest there aren’t enough pop acts, dance folk will say there aren’t enough dance acts, folk folk will say there aren’t enough folk acts, rock folk will say… well you get the picture.

Almost everyone will say it’s stuck in the past, too corporate, too white middle-class, not as good as it used to be, etc.

The BBC will say it’s been the “best Glasto ever”

Tickets will sell out instantly again next year

Anyone who was late because they were doing their sodding hair deserves to get cut off. Shows a lack of respect for her audience. She had all day to do her hair!

Is there a sweepstake on how many different acts Dave Grohl will play with?

I think it’s three so far including the ChurnUps.

...they need to take more risks with headliners

Agree. Main interest around the headliners tends to be whether or not an aged performer can still perform.
It's difficult because of the way music has changed. Hard for newer bands/performers to build the same kind of "headliner" following as those from pre-digital era. Much more fragmented with loads of smaller niches.

Fatboy slim was the dogs bollox, I dread to think how long it took to edit and build that set

Seen him a few times now both times a really good night out and generally fun atmosphere. He always came across as genuinely having fun and a bit humble at the end thanking the crowd. No "I'm a DJ god!" Type BS.

He did a series of mixes on his you tube channel before a tour. I think it was 9 x 1hr mixes and built the set out of those, so not just thrown together.

Or, Slash with Myles Kennedy - all the Slashing you need, with someone who can sing.

I've seen both options at Download (different years). GnR were arguably worse at Download than last night, and Axl is easily the weakest link.

Enjoyed Måneskin. Need to be on a bigger stage.

Anyone watch CATQ headlining Woodsies last night? What did you think? It definitely wasn't 'more of the same' and not sure how well it came across.

He played a cut down version of his 3cd / 2 hour latest album which is itself a rock opera performance piece based around "Angels in America" with lots of dance, monologues between songs, etc.

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jun/18/christine-and-the-queens-review-meltdown-royal-festival-hall-london

I thought as a piece it was amazing, his voice and dance is just beautiful. I'd really like to have gone and seen it performed properly, in it's entirety to a crowd who know what they were getting. So it feels churlish to say, but the songs aren't as accessible and at times I kind of wanted a bit of the traditional 'promote the new album but here's all the hits too' as a set.

Can't fault the performance though.

Winston, have you been to Glastonbury? There’s so much more to it than the headliners.
There’s a legends slot and Blondie and Elton John surely are fit for that? But there is absolutely hundreds of other events happening at the same time should you not want to watch a headliner.
I thought last night was held organised, watch GNR if that’s your type of music, or watch half of a set by Lana Del Ray if she can be arsed coming out, or watch one of the other many many events happening at the same time.

Been to Glastonbury 4 times but  not recently. Last time I went was mid 90s and basically the line up doesn’t seem to have changed!

Obviously I know there is a whole host of stuff going on. But honestly do most of those punters look like the reason they paid 400 quid was to watch someone banging wind chimes in the green field?

I’m  sorry but I’m sticking to my guns here - these acts are not just ‘not current’ they are absolutely prehistoric - 60, 70, 80 years old!  I just think it’s sad that my kids (who are really in to music and gigs) don’t want to go to glasto as it’s full of old people both playing and watching and the cost is too much to put up with that for the peripheral stuff they could see somewhere else I.e they saw AM at Emirates and many of the smaller bands like Cavetown in Brighton.

That wasn’t the case when I went - the headliners were almost ALL my generation.

Weirdly my two are girls are there now. I’ve given them the week of school to go. And they’re absolutely loving it, but they’re not following the BBC Playlist. Been full of modern artists they listen to.

And yes, the outer areas are still crammed. The Lottery Winners on Friday was rammed as was Jamie Webster. Yesterdays the two girls watched The Latham’s, Lewis Capaldi, Lizzo, Lana Del Ray and countless other acts as they walked around. Friday was again a load of bands the girls wanted to see. Today the same.

But aren’t all larger festivals a mixture of new and old favourites? I was at one earlier this year with Paul Heaton and Pulp headlining. Kendal calling has Nile’s Rogers, Happy Mondays, Scouting for Girls. But look underneath at the other music and it’s pretty amazing. Glastonbury isn’t for me which is why I’m sat at home watching it on my TV, it’s not the music that stops me going, other reasons. And we are guaranteed to get tickets every year, just my choice not to go….ever!

Seemed like he would've done the same, with the same passion even if no-one was watching!

Gutted to have missed out on Pryzm tickets, imagine that in a small venue!

Stage curfew times are all agreed as part of the licence, along the with the process/procedure for overruns. They're not needing to apply every year any more but the 10 year licence is up next year. She got the extra 15 mins right up to the hard cutoff, they should have just adjusted the setlist and aimed to have got the hits out before the end.

I think there's far more going on than her hair, her last two performances at festivals in Brazil in the last month were also cut short due to starting late then hitting curfews.

been doing a trawl. BC, NR were excellent for a lazy sunday afternoon. The Chicks were good, but C&W is not a favourite. Yusuf/Cat seems just like a lovely bloke, I'm enjoying it.

Thanks DezB about CatQ; you're right and it was an immense performance. I don't know why I needed that validating but thanks.

I quite like watching Sparks on Friday night....with that Cate bird dancing.....still can't get that tune out of my head  ...."crying in her latte"

But loved GnR last night....Slash was definitely the headliner, then the bass player, Rhythm guitar then the drummer.....didn't think much of Andrew Lloyd webber on the vocals tho...ha ha ha

Catching up with yesterday. Seems as though it's compulsory to slag off anything that's not cool young things, but I'm really enjoying the Manics. They seem to be sounding pretty damn good at the moment, and really liked the appearance by The Anchoress, hoped they were going to do Little Baby Nothing with her as well. Highlight so far was the Rick Astely Smiths set though. He's playing at a festival I'm going to in a few weeks, but presume he won'd do any Smiths stuff without the Blossoms.

No sign of the Lana Del Ray set on iPlayer - hope it appears sometime and hasn't been ditched due to the set being truncated.

Any chance we can stop with all the acronyms? Or at least follow convention and define them on first use. Makes understanding this thread much harder than it needs to be.

He looked to have a couple of cdjs and a mixer that he'd occasionally pretend to tweak. His headphones appeared redundant and yet somehow he's mixing multiple tunes at once perfectly in sync with the videos on the big screen

Always wondered what that generic, bland ballad/pop is that you hear in taxis.
Turns out, it's called Dermot Kennedy. He's an Irish bloke who sings in a mid-west US accent.
Sounds like it's generated by AI. Yeesh.

Lewis Capldi blew me away. Not with the music - fairly bland pop stuff, but his vulnerability, relatability as a real, flawed human and the way the crowd basically accepted his voice loss and sang for him - likely making it a better experience for some in the crowd than if the set had gone flawlessly. Respect.

He's at least managing a decent impersonation of himself. He will be carried by the songs being classics, but that's fine - he's earned that. As a nostalgia-fest this will work quite well, I think.
