My doc recommended that I look into hypnotherapy as a way of managing IBS anxiety. It is not covered by NHS or insurance so it is eye wateringly expensive. Before going ahead I'd like to hear if anyone has experience good or bad, tips, funny stories or whatever! Thanks!!

I've had it, for relaxation and pain management, not IBS. I found it very pleasant, and the visualization exercises you can take away and do at home.

Had the chance to try it a few years ago. Incredibly relaxing and a positive experience, I'd try it again. She did have problems getting to go under at first, apparently I have control issues and wouldn't let go. Eventually I gave one of those massive jumps you get falling asleep sometimes and I was away.

I tried it for anxiety - did work well at the time, but didn't last that long. Was quite impressive how easy it was to be hypnotised, the chap I saw used mental confusion scripts, which are really odd, yet effective, basically they sort of sound like gibberish but you're so focussed on trying to make sense it sucks you in.

Thanks - I think what I am hoping to get is some techniques for self hypnosis that I can use on my own when the need arises. The hypno recommends 10 sessions so thats 10 big bills but hopefully time for me to learn to do this

10 sessions sounds like a lot. I would do 2 or 3 get on with what you've learnt and then go back for more as required.

IIRC I once heard a hypnotherapist say that if a hypnotherapist can't help you within 4 sessions then they can't help you at all.

A friend is a hypnotherapist and I got used as part of his training for some sessions, it was sports based and it worked very well so I would recommend

Mrs Super tried it as a way to help quit smoking a good few years ago. She said it worked in that it took away the craving and desire to smoke (she said it was a very strange how it worked) but she did not go back for the 'booster' sessions and the effect diminished and she started smoking again. She quit eventiually with willpower and patches.

I've tried it; it works if you want and doesn't if you don't want. Nice feeling though, very relaxing.

Tried it for same reason as OP. Didn't work for me at all (found CBT way more helpful). As others have said, very relaxing though. Almost like a brain massage.

I've had it for anxiety and insomnia and it worked really well. Only needed a couple of sessions, ten sounds like a lot!

Years ago before the net was invented i borrowed a few books on hypnotherapy from the local library. I still use the technique now to get to sleep if my mind is chock a block with stuff.

Years ago myself and a mate went to a show completley & utterly baked. After a while the hypnotist asked the audience to put the tips of there fingers together with the palms facing each other.

A few people were susceptible and easily hypnotised so they could not take their tips apart ,my mate being one of them . These poor souls were then taken up to the stage to be humiliated.

After a couple of minutes on stage my mate came out of the trance and was all of a sudden faced with the reality of about a hundred people all looking at him & pissing themselves laughing , every stoner's worst nightmare!! After returning to his seat (traumatised) he was not himself for the rest of the night , I however laughed my bollocks off 😆

Hoping it's not like that:-)

As far as I can see the large number of sessions is because this therapist includes an element of psychotherapy and looking into causes and not just symptoms. If it works it will be money well spent because this thing is ****ingup my life just now.

I used a website called hypnosisdownloads.com a few years ago when I had a period of anxiety and insomnia. I found they were really good, and you download them to your device so can re-use them as often as needed.

Just turn it on, darken the room, lie there and it helped me a lot.
