Anyone ever have a Bennetts fracture of the thumb?

Did mine last night coming off bike hard on some acorns in the woods. Minor injury clinic was great. In Xray plaster cast and out in under an hour. Now awaiting hand-clinic appointment to see if it needs pinning (likely by all accounts).

Anyone had one of these and if so what is the likely outcome? How long out of action. It is my right hand too which is a pain and makes my job near impossible!

Cheers

wf

Ouch. Sorry to hear that OP.

Not had one. Saw plenty back in the day in the ED and fracture clinic.

Like you say, treatment usually involves some kind of fixation. Typically a K-wire approach that keeps things in place while healing.

6 weeks and then get some physio - whether it is offered or not.  Function should be good in time.

some light reading for you

I crashed back in 2012 resulting in a broken right thumb (I'm right handed!). I think mine was a Rolando fracture, 1st metacarpal fractured into 3 pieces.

I had to have surgery to plate the bone, which went well. I can't remember the timescales but I think I was in a cast for 6 weeks after surgery and then had another 2 or 3 of weeks off work after that. Not sure how long it took to get full movement back.

Thumb works well although it's slightly shorter than it used to be!

Yep, I had one after falling on a dry ski slope about thirty years ago. Six weeks in a cast, and a thumb that's ached a bit in the cold every since.

Did mine in mid-September 2014. Bennetts fracture. Broke it on the Saturday*, surgery on the Tuesday. Two pins to keep my thumb in place. Around 6 weeks in plaster. Non-dominant hand so still managed to wipe my own arse. Back at work a couple of days later. Looking back at Strava, my first ride back was commuting after 8 weeks and I remember that being sore, no proper MTB ride until the festive break (approx 12 weeks post injury). Hand remained swollen for ages afterwards and I still have a (very) small bit of restricted movement now - natural resting position for of thumb is it sticks out a bit more than before. Feels tighter even now if I stretch my thumb tip over to touch my pinkie, for example.

* stupid crash on the WC DH track at Nevis Range. Third run of the day, instead of sending it off the 5' drop near top of track like I normally did, I used the chicken route down some woodwork to the right. Turned too sharply back onto the main line and front wheel slid out. Right in front of a group of folk who were waiting at the side. They helpfully advised there was a first aid patroller who was looping the track and would be able to help me - unfortunately I was the first aid patroller they were referring to 😀 . That was the end of my volunteering at Nevis Range... A mate loaded bike on to my car roof rack and I drove back to Forth Valley RH for treatment, knowing if I went to the Belford I'd be stuck up there with a pee'd off Mrs a11y and young kid at home...

Bennett's fracture on my left thumb when i came off riding to work in about 2005. No pinning but 6 weeks in plaster with my thumb sticking up. Did it just before xmas, biggest pain was the grief from the other half as she had to drive me everywhere. Off the bike for another 4 weeks after but no long term effects.

Scrolling down I caught a glimpse of the photo with the wire exposed - I really wish I hadn’t seen that! 🤢

Did mine in 2005 along with collar bone after coming off my bike at the end of a long ride. I had three screws which were removed a couple on months later. Thumb is as good as the other one and no limitations. I think I was off bike for around 8 weeks.

September last year on a rooty off piste trail at Grizedale. (I remember Bennett’s but not 100%). Lots of worrying comments about possible surgery if it didn’t go back together well, after cast. But actually just under 6 weeks in plaster and then “be careful for a while but just start using it normally “

I started doing safe gentle rides straight away. Didn’t need any physio.  Full movement near enough. No pain

right hand and the thumb up in air makes it completely useless for anything. Dominant hand - arse wiping awkward

thought I’d done the same to left hand in May (!) but just done tendons/soft tissue,  that’s still swollen and sometimes painful now.

I did my right thumb maybe 15 years ago.  No loss of function, restricted movement or anything like that.  You'll be fine.

Having a cast in the thumbs up position, plenty of piss taking. Enjoy
