The eldest kid was always a horrendously fussy eater and very thin(2nd percentile weight, 75th height). We got a lot of grief from doctors etc when he was a baby, to the extent that we stopped going to weigh ins etc "this is not a third world country" etc etc
For the first few years he mainly ate pasta and pesto. Then about 4 years ago he branched out into whatever he'd been 'forced' to eat at school/friends' houses. It was better, but by no means great.
Then last year, when I was out of work, I made a real effort to get him doing a bit of cooking. It paid off, in spades.
He took an interest in it, and worked out that food didn't just miraculously appear. He realised what an effort it was and how annoying it was when his brother dissed his food.
A few weeks after this, he was making pasta and loving it. No big deal I hear you say, but I didn't have a clue how to make pasta from a pile of spinach leaves and a pile of flour. Pizzas. The joy he got when his toad in the hole rose properly.
Then he was off into cakes and chocolate cookies. And apple crumble, with custard. Not from a tin natch. Then autumn arrived and we were traipsing round Manchester picking blackberries to mix with the neighbours apples. Yum.
Schnitzels.
Then roast dinners was his big thing. Meatballs Pasta bake.
The joy when he discovered shit ache mushrooms (sic) in Sainsberries (sic).
Stir fries. His version of KFC is absolutely amazing. Roast potatoes.
Pancakes of course. With frozen blueberries in them.
Endless smoothies.
His mum is away with work 3 weeks out of four and he's turned into this shopping machine. He gets busy with Jamie Oliver cookbooks and works out the meal plan for the week and then bugs me into going to the shops. I wander round in a daze before handing over the debit card at the till.
There's none of this "can we have Maltesers dad". It's all "can we have Chestnut shrooms as well as shit ache" " we need more self raising flour" " can we get some of this herb cos we haven't tried it" " we need some more terryaki" "Oh look a chilli plant" blah blah blah
Then I get home from work to a pile of chopped vegetables and him desperate to turn on the cooker and get cracking. It's so ****ing awesome after the years and years of eating fish fingers, pasta and **** all else. We're eating really really nice flavoursome food and the best thing of all is that I don't need to cook it (or at least not much)
If your kid is a picky shite, then get them to do the cooking. Make it fun obv, and it may be an amazing result.
Fantastic result. My nephew was a real fussy eater, but he's a chef at a great restaurant now !
My boys are pretty fussy, might suggest shit ache mushrooms though.
