My old job did a calendar leave year, which was a nightmare. Current employer does 'tax' year, which has been fine in the past for using up any leftover days in March. Last two years I did a trips to Scotland skiing & biking in march, which was fine.

But this year is a sack of shit. I've cancelled three ski/ climb long weekends in a row and just seen the forecast for 21 march is 10 degrees and pissy. I've tried slotting in a few days in Wales or lakes but the forecast is dire. If it comes to it I'd even ride the Peak If it would just stop ****ing raining.

Going to 'bleau at Easter as usual but need some ideas for 4 days before then.

Perhaps I should take up paddling again....

Yeah, I know 1WP and all that

Yep. Can't really think of anything to do with them because the weather is so uninspiring.

Just book them and take the days off. You don't have to 'do' anything with them - if the weather's crap have a lie in, read a book, go for a walk, go to the cinema, sit on the sofa in your pants and scratch your balls, do that bit of fettling on the bike that you never quite get around to, it doesn't matter. If it's not, go for a ride. Or just go for a ride and get wet. Not everything has to be a 'thing', it's perfectly fine (and healthy) to just do 'stuff' occasionally.

Just take the days off and support your local pub(s)
At least you've got a job 🙂

I've never struggled to enjoy just having a day off at home to relax, and I've never struggled to use all my annual leave.

I've had a few colleagues who essentially work 4 day weeks leading up to the end of their leave period using up left over leave, they seem to enjoy that too.

I get 38days holiday plus I usually accrue another 6 days during summer shutdown from working the 3weekends.

I usually get paid any left over days at the end of the year. Ker-ching!

My last PAYE job we were able to buy or sell 5 days of leave each year subject to management approval. Always seemed to work out across the team

Really?! Sounds like you’re all programmed. Just had 7 months off, not planned just time off between stuff, and i really don’t feel the need to fill my life with loads of other activities, just getting on with the business of existing is rewarding enough

Current job is Jan to Dec so everyone is trying to use up remaining leave at Christmas.

Last year was really busy and carry over was supposed to be used in Q1.

Q1 was also busy so April is my first leave this year. No plans, just using up carry over. Then I'm into my normal leave allowance and TOIL.
I can see there being a lot of carry over next year.

Previous job had a cunning system where everyone started their leave in the month of their birth. With a larger staff, I'd find an excess of leave to use up at the end of summer. Having the whole of September off for several years was lovely.

I would have a whole load of long weekends. I ended up with weeks to take as I planned to go away in the autumn but work very much got in the way, and rather than using holiday, gained a week of overtime hours....

There's always something to climb , it doesn't always have to be awesumz.

Our leave year was stupidly moved to 31st August, so everyone is either off in the school holidays with kids or havi g to be off in tne sxhool holidays to use up leave.

Or you take a few long weekends March-July and use it up tnen.

I just did 2 days in the Lakes using up holiday. Forecast was rubbish so drove over Monday morning, went to buy a new climbing helmet. Weather was dry so got the bus to far end of Borrow dale and walked back across the tops. Was below the cloud and weather was still and windless perfect.
Tuesday was danker but went for a walk up Mosedale because I'd never been there. Very pretty and got to practice navigating in clag on the tops. Saw no one and found a random bothy I'd never heard of.
In short just go, take your waterproofs and find somewhere to explore. Or stay at home and do some DIY. Just don't waste it at work.
Hopefully pic helps you decide.

Just book them and take the days off. You don’t have to ‘do’ anything with them

I’ve never struggled to enjoy just having a day off at home to relax

I'm the total opposite! Only so many days off in a year (or indeed while you have your health), got to make the most of them. It's frustrating to waste them on bad weather days, or at the end of the leave year because I cancelled some trips due to bad weather earlier in the year.

Hell no. I love what I do for a living but I love days off even more. I’ve taken random days off and done nothing much, played Xbox, afternoon nap, sat in the garden, watch films all day… etc. Last week I did 4 days in Wales, the weather was pretty grotty but BPW, Cwmcarn and Forest of Dean in the rain beats sitting in the office.

It's taken me 3 years to get to a point where this is a welcome issue. For quite a while the notion of having evenings & weekends off, no phonecalls outside of working hours or last minute dicking for jobs or being recalled from leave was a novelty.

Now I'm fully the otherside and can't wait to use every single damn day and wish I had more. Thankfully I managed to get it all used this year. 😂

Don't worry about it pal just turn on the tellybox and u can watch celebs on holiday instead, celebs go campervanning, celebs go glamping, top ten luxury hotels. It's the fewture, why go on holiday when you can watch someone more worthy!

When you have finished with that you can watch-em doing gameshows, playing at other peoples jobs, doing houses up, watching telly. It's a gamechanger you'll love it.

I get to just stack them up with my long service leave.  Over 3 months fully paid leave just sitting waiting to be used...and with 17.5% leave loading on top too.

"and with 17.5% leave loading on top too"

Bloody Aussies, mind you I'm currently on 9wk leave, getting paid for nearly all, but then zero paid leave till April 2025 😯

I take 1 day off every week from April until it starts to run out so it feels like doing a 4 day week job.  It means I have no problem using them and this year have actually bought some days off to reduce my tax bill.

Fortunate enough to be able to carry leave over. 6 days left, so means I have 34 days from April 2024 to end of March 25. How I will take 34 days off I have no idea. Pretty busy year ahead.

I have also just returned from a week in Tenerife. I tend to always do a week away in the sun in Feb. (Only affordable as it’s just me I need to pay for)

I accept that skiing or winter climbing are weather dependent, but bikes don’t melt in the rain.

Just get out there any way.
