With the live link up to the court room from a cinema?
I've never done jury duty before.
I was supposed to be in yesterday and today, it seems like a really inconvenient system. You can't go in until you have a confirmation call to attend, even for the ballot, so I took the day off thinking I needed to go in but I'm just sitting by the phone waiting for a call that might never happen.
My work is already moaning for not being in, the days off is fine by me, unpaid from work, but I'm guessing i can't claim loss of earnings if I'm not actually in the court.
What have your experiences been?
You should be able to claim, but it's minimum wage IIRC. You should have been given/sent all the paperwork.

Offer to work part time untill you get called in or officially sent home?

Thats completely normal - jury duty was exactly the same in that respect in the 'before times'.

I think you should be able to claim loss of earnings for any missed work. I'm not sure how that works when you are on "standby" but clearly if you are a train driver or brain surgeon you can't be on standby for court AND deliver what your employer wants from you.
The only thing that sounded odd was you waiting to be called - the "old" system was you called a hotline each morning. You are not waiting for them when you should have dialed in are you?
There is a hotline, the after 5pm one that said both last night and on sunday that you don't go in until they phone you in the morning and give you a time to attend unless they haven't contacted you by 1:30 phone the hotline again after 5.
It's given me the impression that soon as they phone me I need to drop everything and go in, I'm probably wrong but this is the part that's confusing me.
They phoned me earlier and said my name is in the ballot for tomorrow again and probably will be up to tuesday.
The documents the posted out are 8 pages of covid distancing guidelines and not really that helpful.
I'll just go back in to work tomorrow and if I need to leave I'll have to, not usually allowed phones in sure they'll make an exception

Ok - get that urgency expectation out your mind... nothing moves quickly in the courts at the best of times! I'm not sure which cinema you are at, or which area you've been "selected from", but if it were me it would take me 45 minutes to get to the cinema my local court is using if I left immediately and drove there. Not everyone can drive, on public transport, with waiting times, changes etc its probably closer to 2hrs if they call right now! My guess is if you get a call - it will be to go tomorrow, or maybe for late PM - get selected and go home...
If the ballot is done at the court rather than cinema it would be marginally more convenient for me (but perhaps not others) but on public transport I would still be lucky to arrive much before 3 if they called at 13:30.
In glasgow so only about 20 min from the cinema. I did think it was a bit of a big ask to go in the day your phoned.
Most people that I've asked about it say "yep, it's a joke"
In the before times my brother was selected but not picked he said it was two mornings of hanging around then sent away before lunch.
I got called last year. Glasgow too, so xcape.
I had to call as normal, then when they were going ahead they called me to confirm I had been selected as standby juror and was to come in the following day.
it was well setup and well explained. thought overall it was good, though this was one of the first ones they'd done there.
it may be that, with the catch up they're trying to push things a bit quicker?
Do letters about jury service get delivered by recorder delivery? I've never been asked, but then again I don't bother opening half the mail I get if I'm not expecting it. Most of it just goes in the bin.

I'd have thrown away a few tax rebates and a couple of PPI cheques if I followed that strategy 🙂
