Really stretching the limits of what STW can do

If you have what route did you use, struggling to find cycle routes.

Google maps no good? I just searched Long Island to Empire State and it's 53 miles, using their 'by bike' option (by car it's 48 so it is a different route), and looking at bits of it does seem to go through several parks etc. so would i assume use quiet roads and cycle paths where available.

A pal of mine cycled from Lancashire to Cornwall and back for a wedding following Google Maps all the way; he was amazed at some of the routes it found for him. He just stuck the phone in his pocket and an earphone in one ear and set off.

No probs.

I mean obviously be aware that they are harvesting your planned route already so they can target billboards you'll ride past on the way specifically 😉

And slightly more seriously, they also seem to list every fast food joint you'll pass; clearly not only do they have a 'for cyclists' algorithm, they also have a 'for american cyclists who need refuelling every 800 yards' one.

Have a look at the NY cycle club website (nycc.org). They’ve got a rides library, linked to ridewithgps, that might have something suitable or at least point you in the right direction.
I’ve used one of their routes in the past (Delaware Water Gap to the George Washington Bridge) and it was fine.

I'm a bit confused. As soon as you cross the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan, you're on Long Island?

It's a big (long) island, where is it that you want to go?

very good point - I just googled 'Long Island' to Empire State and looks like the program takes Long Island airport as the start point.

But strictly New York is a state and Long Island's in NYS so it's a distance of precisely zero, or could be several hundred from the tip of LI to the northern border of NYS with Canada.

Bottom line, you can type it into google, select cycle and it'll give you a decent route

(349 mi / 111 hours, some roads may be closed in winter for Montauk to Champlain FWIW)

Do you mean Long Island City? Forget the bike and get the F train.
If you mean Long Island it's about 50 miles long so you need to be clear about your start and end points as NYC is a big place.
