[Closed] Anyone changed the Bearings on a Washing Machine Drum ?

I've got to change the bearings on a gorenje Washing machine, I've never had any bother with it for 8 years, I've been told by the local repair center it's worth hanging onto as... they don't build them like that anymore, so I've sourced SKF bearings free of charge & just need a inner seal.
Wondering if anyone has done something similar & what it entails i.e. do you need a puller to get the bearings of the drum shaft?

Cheers

Go to the library and borrow the Haynes Washing Machine & Dryer repair manual. I think you'll need a puller.

Alternatively won't your local repair centre pull them off for you?

I've done two different Indesit machines. Both had a "spider" that carried the bearings and bolted to back of the tub. I needed a bearing puller to pull the spider off the drum spindle. The one was dead easy, minimal removal of other components, the other one was a **** pig.

Not a hard job if your mechanically minded.

I tired it once, sounds simple, but was so much faff I gave up and stuck the whole thing in the bin (back in the days when bin men took anything).

Then went out and bought one for 90 quid. It lasted about 10 years, which included washing mountains of very muddy kit.

I've done it in the past, never again. Total pig of a job and didnt last that long. (Probably too many hammers involved)
Plus washing machines have the metal frames made out of pressed steel, meaning if your hand slips whilst trying to pull the drum seal spring back on it slices your hand open like a tin opener.
I HATE working on washing machines.

Lucky to find one with renewable bearings most machines now have to be binned when the bearings go, as they're all integral.

The bearings on ours went, the repair chap came round and replaced the whole drum! (Under warranty) they looked integrated into the drum and a bitch to replace.

I've done it a couple of times - it's easy!

If you regularly fix your bike or car then you can do this 🙂

just need a inner seal

You definitely need that, and when I did it I found that I could only buy the seal with a set of bearings from the manufacturers at an inflated price.

It's pig of a job so not worth doing on a cheap washing machine; you'll need plenty of space for all the bits but I found I didn't need bearing pullers, even the corroded bearing killed by the inadequacies of the old seal came out easily.
