What’s it like for a weekend break? I remember this years Giro prologue going up the SAN Luca climb with what looked like arcades all the way up and thought it looked a place worth visiting. Has anyone been, what else does Bologna have to offer.
Tick.
Wierdly going for a stag * in Bologna in march.....
* I say stag but the groom's nearly 60 it's not going to be a wild party .....
Rick Stein went there for one of his "Long Weeekends" series, maybe worth watching that episode on You Tube.
nearly 60 it’s not going to be a wild party
I think you might find a few people on here would happily challenge that assumption
We stayed there for one night during a trip around Italy. I wish we had more time it was lovely and the food was brilliant. It's nickname the fat city is justified.
yes, we had 2 weeks just outside this year, so had a visit. lovely town with plenty of porticos (the arches covering all the walkways).
climb the 500 steps up the leaning asinelli tower for a spectacular view of the whole town.
if you wanted to do a very informative tour of the place then i could put you in touch with the lady we used throughout our stay, she was very good.
Yep, did a weekend break with my wife, thoroughly enjoyed it.
Only regrets are that the two towers were closed for refurbishment, and that we didn't hire a food guide or something (my Italian was only at Sorrento tourist level, so wasn't confident trying to explore off the beaten track of touristy style restaurants, all the best restaurants were down little alleys or in crowded marketplaces!).
Take a pregnant wife if possible, Italians will go out of their way to assist a pregnant woman it would seem, even had an argument in airport until I realised that the frantically gesticulating and increasingly irate woman at check-in was actually trying to persuade us to take her and her husband's place at the head of the queue. I finally caught an 'incinta' as she pointed at my wife and the penny dropped.
Would happily go back.

I used to go for work, it’s a lovely place, nice people, lots to explore and some fantastic restaurants, lots of which barely look like restaurants... I was lucky as I always had locals as guides, so if you can get some local pointers, that will make your stay even more enjoyable 🙂
Yossarian?
Long time ago. A mate and I rode there on Ducatis after being at the Bol d'Or. Visited the Ducati factory, where they treated us like royalty, gave us a tour, fed us lunch and gave both bikes a free service with fresh chains and sprockets. Also visited the Morini factory and saw/rode with the prototype turbo 500.
Excellent food abounds. We absolutely stuffed ourselves.
We rode back to Dover in a oner, riding through the night. Came through Switzerland on the way.
Not much help, eh?
Great place lots of independent businesses and best city for food. 2 nights at least I'd say.
Been there four or five times. Called “the fat one” in Italian due to the amazing (if you like Italian food) there. Great restaurants. Visit the towers, Uni, food market, towers. If you are into cars Modena is just down the road.
Pleased to say Scotroutes experience wasn't a one off. I also rode there on a Ducati and was waved to the front of the queue to get into the factory. Alas my mate was on a Honda so no free service!
Thanks for replies, will put it on the list for next year .
In the food market we went to a random little sit down place for food upstairs, got a lovely bowl of pasta
We went there back in June for a few days....lovely place, great atmosphere, good food and plenty to see. We also went to Ravenna and Parma which we also enjoyed. A trip around the Ferrari Museum in Maranello was fun as well.
A lot packed into a few days and we want to go back specifically to Bologna and spend some more time exporing.
they treated us like royalty
They held a referendum and decided you should be deposed and forced to spend the rest of your life living in exile in Portugal?
Handy for Mugello, and it's likely to be Rossi's last season next year. Mugello should be epic... 🙂
yup, I went there two years ago. It's a typically beautiful Italian city. Loads of restaurants, history, churches etc to see.
It's busy but that's part of it's charm.
Worth longer than a weekend too.
Do it/

You don't mean a spag?
(Sorry, that's all I came here to say. Though this thread puts it on the visit list.)
that is of course worthy of not being served in Bologna. Don't dare ask for a spaghetti bolognese.
Bologna, home of the Two Towers

Went there this October & included watching Giro Dell'Emilia on San Luca climb. Would recommend it & would go back. Only 20 mins taxi from airport into town.
