Pondering a day out on the river with the children. Probably something like Kerne Bridge to Monmouth, lunch on one of the beaches before SY, that sort of thing.

Just wondering about a couple of things...

How busy is it at the moment?

Water level? I've been when it's bone dry, and even went down during the 2007 floods (which was fast!). Ideally want nice leisurely bimbling, but enough flow to aid the fact that two of the party won't be much use paddling!

Can't comment on busy, but I've done that trip around this time of year and it's fairly consistent water level wise, obviously discounting biblical floods.

I'd say you'd have enough flow to keep you bobbing along but some effort will be needed from the newbies 😊

It's a brilliant trip with unreal scenery.

I cross the Wye a few times a day when commuting, so see it in all states.

It’s on the lower third for height at the moment, but with the weekend and today’s rain will rise slightly, but that will be 3-4 days away. It’s definitely not bone dry and it’s no fun pushing a laden canoe when it is.

Symonds Yat area is quite busy, has been since before lockdown was lifted. But you can find a patch outside of the throng to be on your own.

I took a break out on my ride yesterday on the Welsh Bicknor bridge by Lydbrook over the Wye. I counted a hired canoe (or two lashed together as seems popular these days) passing under every 30 seconds. It was busy. All the tourist things in the FofD are busy atm.

Thanks all.

Yep, have done before and it's a ballache. Would be really annoying with children on board!

To be expected, I suppose. Will be trying to go on a weekday, which may make it a bit quieter.

Two rafted together makes sense for us, stable for the children, but means I'll be doing almost all the paddling!

Enjoy.
We did this last year and got stuck a few times. My tall brother managed to push us out and get going again.

Another fun thing for the children is stone skimming. Plenty of flat stones on the beaches. Getting one to the other side is a skill.

Ahem. I think you'll find it was ME who got out of the canoe to push us off the rocks. We did Glasbury to Whitney-on-Wye with lunch in Hay (The Three Tuns, bloody excellent food and a super pint). Parked at https://canoehire.co.uk/, they ferried us to the start at Glasbury and back from the pickup point

Riverside pubs are shut apparently 😭

Saracens head is definitely open as is the Wye Knot. The Old Ferrie was being refurbed but I think opening first weekend in August.

Canoeists seem to be enjoying themselves on the first set of rapids on Sunday. Absolutely loads of kayaks etc out. Busy both at Ross and Kearne bridge launching points.

A far cry from the Island just after the Sarries DISAPPEARING after the Feb storms. I think they've finally removed the smashed up caravan that was deposited during those storms!

Haha busted. Lose 5 man-points.

Edit. Or maybe gain them. Not sure of genders at play.

Well, that was a sublime day out! Hot, but a nice breeze occasion and the shade of the trees was required at times. River was busy in parts, mainly around SY obvious, but never crowded. Plenty of times when there wasn't a soul in sight. Kingfishers all over the place, fish rising to the fly.

Water level was low, and a few of the riffles were a bit bumpy on the rocks underneath, but overall a decent flow.

Monmouth Canoe Hire were excellent. Very much recommended (even if one of fhe lads was wearing a Sick Bikes T shirt...! 😀 )

I'd imagine it's pretty rammed on a weekend day, but well worth a trip if you can go on a weekday.

Oh, and everyone in and around Monmouth was in a really positive, happy mood. Seems they were glad to be back open, with things slowly creeping back to something like normal.
