I'm looking at an eBay special frame and fork, circa £400.
Anyone done similar able to tell me roughly what duty and other charges worked out at please so i can budget accordingly?
(Obviously it may not end up attracting any in practice but I'm not expecting that)
Cheers
I bought some Chinese carbon wheels for £250 a few years back and the duty on them was about £45. Not sure if that sort of rate might have changed recently though.
Grand ta - 20% ish sounds like a good place to start.
You'll have the pay VAT on the value of the goods, and there may also be customs duty too depending on the type and value of goods.
https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty
^ all explained there, and there's a number to call to check duty rates on specific types of goods, although I'm sure I've foudnt aht info on another page somewhere...
EDIT - found the page, there's an online calculator and link below suggests 4.7% (then the VAT as above)
I think duty is about 4.8% on a frame and if I remember correctly that is added to the whole cost including post and packing. Then you add VAT at 20% to that total and finally the carrier may charge you £10 to £15 for administration.
If you do have to pay that lot and the supplier hasn't put a fraudulent low value on the ticket...
Frame = £400
Duty @ 4.8% = £19.20
VAT @ 20% = £83.84
Admin £15
Total maybe £518.04
All from rough memory, been a couple of years since I bought anything from outside the EU
Most of the Chinese carbon companies seem to write a lower price on the customs declaration, so generally a bit less than that. I have had four or five big package with carbon bits in sent from China over the years, charged by customs on all but one of those. Normally around £50.
What Jason said.
IME stuff rom the far east is always cheap, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan etc. Most recent was some forks, just over £300 paid, had to cough up another £17 at delivery, that's unusual though, normally nothing. Stuff from the US on the other hand pretty much always has bits added so I've given up buying from there.
I've bought a couple of frames at similar price to the OP.
Duty and fees were around £70 - £80 each IIRC though I don't know what values the seller put on the documents and RM/PF add a fee too. It's worth noting that I always told them to put the right value on when the sellers asked what value to put on the documentation.
Maybe worth adding too that when one broke and I got a warranty replacement, they stated that on the documents and I had no duty to pay.
Yeah, got charged for two of my three frames and all three sets of wheels. Had one frame which was £900 and I think the fees were about £150, all others have been significantly less.
Perfect ta, still makes it significantly better than the nearest UK supply which also ticks less boxes.
I’m looking at an eBay special frame and fork, circa £400.
Is it the aero gravel frame ?
Is it the aero gravel frame
Well it's not what I'd think of as aero, but could well be the same one, it's listed as a 700c frame.
I struggle with the "gravel" description in so much as it seems to mean "hybrid/tourer for people who won't ride a hybrid/tourer". Good tyre clearance, disc, rack and guard mounts are the main things I was looking for and it ticks all those boxes. It's a plastic tourer.
Btw, I got a "2017 aero gravel" frame from velobuild for about £400 and didn't get extra charges. Out of curiosity, which frame did you order?
Looking at the the velobuild and the generic ebay one I'd say they're one and the same, just with a different colour scheme.
Had a few frames and mates have all have been between £30-45
I took delivery of a tideace cx072 today. £400 incl postage. Duty and admin worked out just under £40.
