As above really, seems I've got plenty of old phones knocking about and using one for a dash cam seems a plausible idea. Any apps to recommend?
I would test the location first and make sure it doesn't block too much of your view.
You will also need to consider how wide angle the lens is and if it covers enough of the view in front, be sure to test it at night as mobile phones are notoriously bad in low light. It would also be worth considering if you will remove it all the time to stop someone trying to steal it.
That’s something I’ve thought of when driving, but in combination with a satnav. I’m surprised that no satnav app has had a dashcam option built in, which give full geolocation as well.
Auroguard Pro works for me. Good enough that I paid for the full version. It'll run in the background if you are using a Satnav App.
I used one years ago for a long period.
1) Its a faff, even with an NFC tag that automatically starts the dashcam app.
2) You always need to plug your phone in
3) Phone runs hot (really hot if its in a tough shock absorbing case, i.e. turns off to save itself)
4) Kills the battery long term
If i was swapping cars all the time i can see why youd want to.
that is the only time i can see it being worth the faff.
i put 40 quid dash cams in both our cars after a non fault accident was turned round on us (a car pulled out from the side of the road suddenly and without indicating driving into the side of the wife as she passed)
They show number plates and gps speed + time/date stamp. auto start / stop and come on if senses an impact (ie carpark dunt) + much much smaller than a phone in the window.
