Youngest is Real Madrid daft, he had a holiday cancelled and didn't mump about it so I was thinking about taking him to see them during the October holidays, covid allowing. Has anybody experience of how you get tickets? Is it as simple as buying them online and booking a citybreak or would I be better with some specialist football company who guarantee a decent seat etc?

Depending on opponents you might be able to buy from the ground, your hotel or other sources a few days before.

Go watch em play Real Sociedad in San Sebastian and have a day out with Doug and the Basque MTB crew the day after.

Scuttler that sounds like a great idea, unfortunately that would be his idea of hell.

We bought tickets to see Barcelona in a pre-season friendly, which I think we bought direct from the club online, although it was a while ago, pretty sure we were able to book the block we wanted to be in, if not the exact seats. Had to go and pick them up ourselves which was interesting in my limited Spanish, but we worked it out.

How sold-out is Real every week? If it's anything like Barca, you might find it a bit tough to get tickets for proper games without being a member.

If you can, go the day after & do a stadium tour too.

Real tour is pretty good actually. I did it the day before seeing Liverpool beat them 1-0 with a goal by Yossi. Stadium is epic and as you can imagine, being in the Liverpool end was an incredible atmosphere.

A group of us at work used to do this regularly.

We did Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Ajax, PSG.

Some tickets are available from the clubs but some are very difficult to get hold of. For those matches we paid over the odds using viagogo.

They were always great weekends and some of the stadiums are incredible.

I've been to see Bayern with friends, ended up buying tickets from Viagogo as they basically sell out the stadium for every game.If memory serves, whilst tickets weren't cheap, they weren't horrendous.

Providing the game you are planing on going to isn't against Athletico, Barcelona or Vallencia then you should be able to get tickets at the ground the day before.

Be aware however that the fixture days and times are only set a few weeks before the game and book your flights accordingly as the game could be any time between the Friday night and the Sunday night.

This window will be narrower if the game you are planning on going to is the weekend before or after a Champions League round. i.e. They won't be playing on a Sunday if they are playing in the CL on the Tuesday or Wednesday.

This is good advice, you also need to be aware that they sometimes get cancelled for champions League
