Looking for something to try to kick start some attempt at gaining fitness. Mid 50s, stopped yoga due to lockdown and not got back in to it, not interested in martial arts (did karate in my teens). Bored with the gym (and my gym of choice has closed down) Is KM suitable? Not paranoid about being attacked in the street just after something that might motivate me to get of my arse, other than cycling.

From what I know of a couple of mates who’ve done it, it is physical, but very much focussed on techniques to f people up and defend yourself.
I know you said you’re not interested in martial arts but have you considered Brazilian jiu jitsu? Unlike karate etc you straight away start practicing with other students full contact, the cardio is great, and will naturally make you want to get fitter, stronger, and more flexible. Now I’ve written that I really want to find a class again!

I've a mate who teaches it, he's ex army, does security work too, and raves about it. He's very disciplined and completely OCD about everything, I'm sure he just needs something to focus on, and this fits his background really.

The self defence part of it will be a good confidence builder I'd imagine.

You say you're not interested in martial arts, isn't Krav Maga a martial art?

Not really no. It’s a self defence system rather than martial art.

Seems like a weird choice then. You say you're not interested in the actual fighting part of it, but IMUninformedO that's just what KM is about isn't it?

A guy at school did it and raved about the violent side of it. He broke someone's jaw in 5th year.

I would have thought that the other fluffier MAs were more what you're after.

Isn't KM basically the hand to hand equivalent of helicopter gunships launching missile after missile at residential blocks of flats? Overwhelming force designed to put your opponent down in the quickest, most brutally efficient manner as possible?

No I’m not interested in learning loads of katas, counting to ten in Japanese and the general martial art vibe.

in that case a Krav Maga class may well suit you.
YMMV but i found it to be a testosterone dependent ponzi scheme.

you might also look up a local MMA class - not too much focus on clean striking or technical grappling... unless you have proir experience, lots of potential to get hurt, usually by someone younger, bigger and either dumb/careless or worse...

Obviously you need a decent mentor/instructor, like this guy.

Well partly inspired by this thread I just signed up to a Brazilian Ju Jitsu taster session 😳

Will I die?

You won’t die, but I very regularly came away aching and humbled. It’s good for the soul!

To reach the top levels you need to learn to barge into your neighbours’ houses and kick them into the street.

I wanted to post the Frankie Boyle joke about Krav Maga but it's a little close to the bone.
