My wife has a good little business doing domestic cleaning a couple of days a week she is trying to push up her hourly wage and is looking into doing carpet cleaning. She is looking at a prochem machine that will cost some where in the region of £2500 plus we might need to swap the Passat estate for something with a taller boot to accommodate it. My only experience is with the rental machines. Any advice regarding eauipment, horrible back breaking work etc. Steer week clear. All greatly received.
I met a chap doing rental flat changeovers who came to clean our carpets. He imported his machine from the usa, cost c 15k. He does well, started just on windows, now carpets and crime scenes. Employs a few people, did a good job on the carpets for us. Machine filled his panel van easily.
Yeah, the guy that did our rental place then the new house we bought had it all contained in his van - just ran a long hose in the house and into each room. Asked to use the outside tap but had a huge water tank he could draw from if needed. Probably saves a huge amount of setup time, carrying equipment indoors and up stairs, etc - took him no time to zip around.
May be worth trying out offering a rugdoctor-type service though to existing clients, just rent the machine when jobs come up. Some people will favour using someone they know and trust over trying out someone new.
It’s hard physical work. Wool carpets are damaged by water if you get it wrong. Get insurance which won’t be cheap. Water extraction is far superior to dry chemical cleaning in my view, but more risky. Synthetic carpets are a doddle to clean. You will need a van with a side door, don’t waste money on an estate. The machines are too heavy to lift into a car. My dad services the equipment and repairs machines so we always have a few about. The prochem steampro is the best if you can run to that. If heats the water up so the cleaning is better and the carpets dry faster. You will also need some pads to lift furniture off the carpet and a blower to help dry the carpet when the outside temp drops.
This is carpet that really needs cleaning...
