Hi I have been told to ask on here as apparently there is a Northern Bias. 😀
My daughter has started Uni at York, I sent her enduro bike via Paisley Freight, and in an error of parenting I have neglected to teach her everything about her bike.
Or as any parent of 18 year olds might know how hard you try to interest them in mechanicing but she always had something better to do. Now when she needs the skills it is all too late.
The problem is that she can't get her back wheel on, its a privateer 161 with Sram Mech. We spent an hour on video phone last night and it just went nowhere, crap picture quality.
I am 5 hrs away and wish I had just driven up with the bike. I am worried that the frame got bent or maybe even something simpler like a bent disc. If I was there I'd have it fixed in minutes.
Anyone near east campus could help?
I coach at York Sport on Saturdays. Not a million miles away
It lost my edit. If she gets herself down to the York Sport road circuit between 1030 and 1230 on a Saturday, we’ll have a bunch of 8-16 year olds and a few folk who can rebuild a bike, including a 19 year old lady who works as a bike mechanic.
Someone will help her out (even if most of them are roadies)
I'm York based and a regular gravel route I do takes me past the other side of the lake to East Campus so I could help out. Like you say OP, it should be a 30 second job with nothing more than an allen key. I might be out that way on Saturday morning if that'd help or if I'm out on the big bike I'm usually heading back that way on the A64 at lunchtime'ish? PM me if you need a hand...
Thanks all this is amazing.
That's a great idea, I am not sure she can get down to York Sport easily with the bike as it doesn't have its back wheel on.
@DaveyBoyWonder - I have Pmed you thanks.
All sorted now, thanks so much for your offers of help. It is nice to know there are people that will help.
She is going to go down on Sat and see what's what with your cycling group anyway!
Glad to hear - she'll likely need to get out of York with a big bike like a Privateer though but theres some ace riding within 45 mins drive - Dalby, Yearsley and Sutton Bank/Hood Hill all with lots of ace off-piste enduro type trails and then Calderdale in the other direction.
Oh dear it is all moot now as it has been knicked from her Uni accommodation.
Mildly predictable. I am v annoyed.
Any pictures? It’s not the most common bike.
Thats crap news. I'll keep an eye open. York unfortunately is like all other cities and you can't leave a decent bike anywhere...
Thanks.
I was super worried about it getting nicked. But part of going to Uni is taking responsibility and she was sure it was secure in the Uni cage thing. What I did not know is that it only has half a roof, so I assume they just climbed the 10foot gate and broke the lock. She is an adult now, her lesson...
Its black with red rockshox forks, and one of the brakes has been shigura-fied, magura lever with shimano caliper (I cant remember if it was front or rear)
I'd pay £250 for its recovery as that my insurance excess. I am still thinking about whether to claim or not as she cannot find the lock or any damage to the loop it was locked to.
Its a bit tattier than this now. As this was when she got it in July 2021
Privateer 161 P1 (Small)
Rockshox rer ford, rockshox shock
That's pretty distinctive, my son's at York (East Campus), I'll ask him to keep an eye out, he's got his bike there too, his accommodation block has a sort of garage thing underneath, and he locks his bike up in there overnight, but then if he's off anywhere else on campus in the daytime or in the city centre it's out in the open :-/
Cheers. She is also on east campus, Anne Lister.
Her lock up is only openable with a pass, but the roof only covers 80% of it, which I did not know before this.
The idea was only to use it for MTB club rides etc, not as a commuter. But she has been so busy with other clubs she didn't use it for a month.
My red line shows where the roof stops, so the bikes are under cover from the rain but there is nothing stopping an athletic scrote from climbing over. Its the stupidest thing I have ever seen. Loads of security and a gaping hole..
ah the bike shed near his block looks more like this

but the 'town house' thing he's in has the internal 'garage' which is better as only his flat mates have access to it.
I'll let him know (Edward).
Cheers. That looks way better.
I think she is planning to post on the Uni MTB club forum. I'm happy to pay a 250 reward if anyone gets it back.

I've WhatsApped him 🤞
My daughter's at York's east campus too, I've asked her to keep an eye out.
Thanks all of you. I really appreciate it.
Sorry to hear it's gone
I'm a bit concerned about the discussions focussing on the security of the bike room/ sheds/ building...
Please tell me that the bike is locked with an insanely big chain/ d lock whilst in the building....?
Any building that more than immediate ( incentivised) family members can access is nothing more than decoration when it comes to bike security.
My ( utterly shit) MTB was nicked from York uni campus within days of arrival. The replacement was never left with less than 2 d locks on it
It had two sold secure D locks, but if you look in the pics, due to the incomplete roof, it may as well have been outside.
If I had know this, I wouldn't have let her keep her bike there.
I also have no idea "how" the locks were applied.
There are times when whatever advice you give your kids, if you are 300 miles away then it does not always get listened to.
And if it gets recovered then its going in her bedroom.

My idiot brother once locked his GT Tequesta up at York College when he was there. Massive D lock through the QR front wheel. Guess what wasn't there at the end of the day when he came back to his bike and guess what he carried home on the bus with him?!
Well there were no wheels or evidence of any locks, so I am going to give her full credit.
