Something I always wanted to do, going to have my first lesson this Friday and been told to bring a selection of woods to play with.

So I have some recently cut Oak, Ash, Hawthorn & Pine. Not sure what to take, so might just put a bit of everything in the boot.
So here is the question................

What bike related items could I possible make?

😉

headset cap would be simple-ish
bar end caps with cork inserts like the brooks ones
valve caps

Hmmm, bar end caps might be a great idea, something fairly simple and small to work on.

Might just give that a try, if I make anything decent soma, I will send you a pair 😉

Spokes! lol!

It's not that difficult to be okay at, but very difficult to master. Ash should turn nicely.

That's good news, just felled 40 ash trees 😉

Turning hubs is pretty straightforward. Making them functional is trickier. They are a nice scale for a beginner to work at though.

PS - If all your wood is freshly felled then it makes a big difference to the way you are able to turn it on the lathe. Might be an idea to check with whoever is getting lessons if they don't know already - they might be expecting you to arrive with a load of kiln-dried blanks.
