I need to replace a misted glazing unit in my french window. (I have asked a couple of local trades but none turn up - confident of doing it myself though!)

I’m ok with doing this myself and took out the unit this morning to measure the unit, 1840mm x 1090mm x 28mm.

Anyone know what glass and glass thickness I should order, as its such a large unit. 6mm glass? toughened glass on both panes?

I also have a small unit in another window - haven’t measured that yet but guess around 800mm x 300mm - presume 4mm untoughened glass will be ok for this unit?

thanks

Not an expert but I thought 4mm was pretty standard for french windows. You can go thicker for more robust unit if it'll take the weight. Both panes will need to be toughened. If it is just misted then it is possible to get them re-made with the existing glass but you are back to getting someone to turn up eg https://www.dgservicing.co.uk/doubleglazing-windows-doors-repairs.php?id=sealed-units (random internet link, no idea if they are any good)

For the larger piece of glass if it is below 800mm from the floor it will need to be toughened. Most units are a 4/20/4mm making it 28 mm total.

For the other unit 4/20/4 untoughened will be fine if it is above 800mm from the floor.

Toughened also if it’s next to a door (within 300mm)…could also use laminated, safe breakage is the key in vulnerable areas

thanks all - 4mm toughened glass it is then. I’ll go and see if the local builders merchant can get one done for me tomorrow.

Ring a glazier, they will know and will sell it you with the merchant's cut. They will probably deliver it to you safely too.

Bit confused, if you took it out and measured it surely you would know the thickness? unless I misread? and if it's out and in the frame why not take it and have them put the double glazed panel in? if you measure a 1840mm x 1090mm double glazed panel wrong it's an expensive mistake.

To replace the panel you need to take the seal out, then the glazed panel will lift out, keep the spacers that sit in the frame, when you do this you will be able to measure the thickness of the panel.

I measured the overall unit thickness as 28mm - but couldn’t make out the glass panel thickness.

Living rurally has many advantages - but getting trades people out to your house is not one of them.

I’m confident of fitting the unit - I measured the current panel size a few times and with different measuring tapes to be sure.

4mm glass weighs exactly 10kg per metre square so easy to work out the thickness if you weigh the unit. So the big unit should weigh just over 40kg allowing for edge sealant etc.

Good point, 2.5Kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness
