So, MCJnr had a Hep A jab last year before a trip abroad, and we were told by the pharmacy that did it (GP wouldn't do it for us) that he could have a booster within 12 months that would give him cover for 10 years if he was going off again and might need it.
Went in today and the same pharmacist insisted that he could have the booster jab at any time and get the same protection, so there was no rush to get it done.
A bit of googling seems to suggest that the booster is needed within 12 months, per the original advice, so I'm a bit confused now.
Anyone got an informed opinion?
They will be following the schedule in here, it's called the green book and is bible for vaccines. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/hepatitis-a-the-green-book-chapter-17
I don't give them anymore but there was a global shortage last year and its possible they are trying to fob off due to supply issues. Worth asking elsewhere see if they will administer.
Depends which vaccine given but if only Hep A here it is:
A booster dose of hepatitis A vaccine should be given at six to 12 months after
the initial dose. This results in a substantial increase in the antibody titre and
will give immunity beyond ten years, however, effective protection beyond ten
years cannot be assured until this booster is given. Until further evidence is
available on persistence of protective immunity, a further booster at 25 years is
indicated for those at ongoing risk (Van Damme, 2003).
Ah, so he should get the booster then if I've understood you correctly
I would say yes if he wants retain / more certainty of retaining levels of immunity. I'm guessing not one of the high risk groups listed in green book, but if have had 1 makes sens get 2nd.
I know there was a restriction on supply and those able to have it was prioritised so community supply for likes of travel was restricted. As said, my guess is trying delay/ fob off as don't have any.
Look for travel clinic local and see if they will give if original pharmacy being awkward, it doesn't really matter who gives, though nice if gets same brand. Can find clinic's here: https://www.masta-travel-health.com/FindAClinic
I've never used them but are meant to be good.
Thanks for your help 👍
