Ive got perfectly good upvc frames in my bay windows but they're about 10 years old and the double glazing is very thin. Despite the house humidity being only around 40% saturation at 18 degrees, the second we have a cold snap the windows are piss wet through in condensation and very cold.
Id really like to replace the glass for something more energy efficient without the cost and upset to the building of having to replace the whole frame. The frames have very wide external shuffle bead on the outside with a locking bead on the inside. Can you get replacment shuffle bead thats narrower and fit thicker double glazing? if so where could I source it? Or do the manufacturers have a monopoly on this kind of thing.
cheers
Although you could grt the bead from various places the chances of ot fitting in the grooves correctly are very slim. You would probably be better off having a square ali bead made in a small size and painted then screw it in this is the only way i could think of getting over it.
Even the newer ali systems can suffer condensation problems.
cheapest option would be to fit some trickle vents, these allow a small steady airflow over the window and will reduce the level of condensation during cold weather.
easy DIY job too!
