my background is as truck and bus fitter/mechanic, I’ve been offered a job as a train fitter, money is about the same as my current job.

Is the rail industry worth moving into, what are the differences (besides the obvious) any pitfalls.

My main draw to rail is the job being more technical, they had engines and bogies in bits, and the vehicles being a step up from a truck/bus?

thanks

Rail industry’s a huge industry to work in, lots of opportunities.  Plenty of new rolling stock coming into service at the moment.

I work for in the infrastructure maintenance side and the only real pitfalls are useless managers and sometimes the corporate speil gets a bit OTT.

loco,s dont have steering wheels, they run on diesel and electric power, they also dont have clutches just  traction motors powered by an alternator that runs off the engine.Oh and the engines and other gbins are encased in the body, so  nice and warm compared to an open ended truck garage.

So some learning curve to pick up new skills

I did a 12 month stint working on the Rail delivery vehicles for a company sub contracted to Network Rail, we had a good working routine, a mixture of mundane service work, snag cracking and repair work, a fair bit of travel with occasional overnight stays, most of the lads were from a plant/hgv background ! Its very big on paperwork everything seems to have a paper trail.

I enjoyed my time there and would have stayed if a better money job hadnt lured me away.
