Son has been offered a post in Scotland. He has been offered "assistance" with accommodation as part of the package. He MAY be offered a similar post elsewhere but without the accommodation. Now at first glance there is a startling difference in the two packages'salary, but in order to properly compare them I need to know approximately what he will be taxed for the accommodation "benefit in kind."
Bear with me, but I've done a bit of calculation. As a rough guide I know that he will likely be offered a cottage which, under normal market conditions, would be rented at £450 pcm. SO a total "benefit" of 5400 p/a. I also calculated the difference in what he would pay in income tax and NI, and the two packages come much closer together. He'd pay £200 more income tax and NI (combined) on the bigger salary per month, then still have to find rent, which would be roughly the same. So for rule of thumb calculations you can add in real terms 650 per month takehome to the lower salary offer. (please let me know if I'm miles off!)
In order to give him a real idea of the difference between the two packages we need to know what he will pay in tax terms for his accommodation (it isn't essential) so that I can show him the actual takehome before pension (which would be roughly the same for each job). So how can I calculate the "benefit in kind" of the accommodation?
