I recently noticed a stone chip on the rear door of my car, VW Tiguan if that makes any difference. Fairly big around 8mm x 6mm and quite deep with a sharp edge to the top coat and right in the middle is an approx. 3mm dia. area that appears to have slight rust appearing.
To start with how do I get rid of the rust before it takes hold? How do you abrade such a small area without damaging the surrounding paintwork?
What primer should I be using? I have already bought a genuine VW touch up set for the colour and top coat.
Is it too cold to be doing this outside at this time of year?
Should I leave it to a professional? I not too bothered about getting an absolutely perfect finish but really want to stop that rust.
Cheers in advance.
You could use a small flat head screwdriver to remove any rust. I'd possibly treat it first with a rust inhibitor. Then once dry, just touch up the chip but dont use too much paint. You can build it up once dry with another coat. Main thing is to stop any corrosion. I assume it's not zinc plated panels then if rusting.
Apparently it has an electrolytic galvanisation rather than hot dip, I don't know if it is possible for a stone chip to get through that but there are definately light red coloured spots in the bottom of the chip.
How about a glassfibre scratch pen? This just the first one I found, there’ll be many places to get one

If it's any consolation, I've had a stone chip on the Octavia's bonnet for years. Slight bit of rust around it but hasn't spread at all. Never bothered fixing it as I don't really notice it. But appreciate on a door it may be a bit more frustrating as you see it every time.
@connect2 those scratch pens look useful, never seen em before cheers!
