So after the excellent advice from the forum my fella has a 2nd job interview/tour on friday just outside Ulverston so we're looking at the South Lakes with the potential for me to commute into Lancaster. So we're now looking to rent while we suss the area before then buying a property together. We need something by April 1st and its impossible to find anything that'll fit 7 bikes and allow a dog. Figured I'd ask the STW massive to see if anybody knows of anybody who rents properties out or randomly has a property in the South Lakes which is sitting empty and they'd like some income. You never know right?!

Can't help with the renting but note that the LDNP is planning to expand in that area and that will drive house prices up.

Might be worth ringing round some holiday lets.
Most will be unoccupied just now. My parents have one (sadly not in the lakes) and they love people like you, three or four months with folks who are between houses is really easy, no weekly changeover cleaning or anything like that. Bit pricier than a 'proper' rental but can probably be had cheaper than advertised for longer periods and no minimum term

Yup we've done just as andrewh said with what is normally a holiday rental as we wait for our house in Arnside to go through. We asked on a local FB group and got an amazing deal on a place in Kirkby Lonsdale.

Thanks for the idea but I fear we’ve probably missed that boat as restrictions lift and holiday lets can probably charge more to get everybody who is desperate for a holiday into their homes.

There's a fb group for grange and cartmel, someone was asking for a rental a few weeks ago, I like the area, the train is good along the coast so you could easily live in Lancaster and commute, or he could.

I know landlords in Lancaster, houses let well due to uni and hospital.

I’m from ulverston and it’s a lot more expensive than surrounding towns- as Poolman says, the towns and villages on the Grange side are pretty handy for Lancaster. Not sure about the trains though, I live away and if I come up on the airport train it seems to randomly terminate at Lancaster. It was 50/50 at one point…

Ravenstown is the cheapest spot in the peninsula. Then flookburgh. Allithwaite/ Cark/ Grange are of a muchness.
Cartmel randomly expensive.

I had a place in Cark for a while. Lovely village.

The train improved a lot, I always get the Manchester airport train to Lancaster and at it's worst c 3 years ago I was getting refunded for 50% of the journeys not happening, that could be the Edinburgh line or the barrow line i was getting off at Lancaster.

Problem at Lancaster for the uni is the train station is in the city centre and the uni circa 3 miles away.

When we buy we'll probably get something more in between the two but for now in the interim we'll work with anything really. Got a viewing on one for Friday but it's mega bucks and already has other interest.

have you thought of getting a 24 hour self storage unit eg. https://lakelandselfstorage.co.uk/ which means you could consider a place with out storage for 7 bikes.

Still not much property available for rent at the moment in the area.

Yes i would put most stuff in storage to give you more flexibility.

Holker hall estates own and rent out quite a few properties in the area, there's a flat on their website now 500 pcm 1 bedder in Holker itself.

Look in the Westmoreland Gazette too Nat trust have some lovely cottages for rent in the Lakes itself, very reasonably priced when they come up.

There's a charity based in coniston that have houses for essential workers, I can't remember the name at the moment but sure it will come back to me.

How about getting a 'liveable' campervan and staying at one of the campsites in the area.
You'd have to put most of your stuff in storage obviously.
Not ideal but might be easier than trying to find a rental especially with a dog.
No dogs just seem to be the default position taken by estate agents, not sure the landlord even necessarily knows or at least they rarely think about it rationally and just go with what the agent says.

I've got a house on the market in Lancaster, plenty of room for bikes 🙂

Could certainly do a deal for a fellow forum user 😉

Bits of Kendal do look stupidly cheap. I was gazing at a 2-bed flat on Rightmove for less than 115k yesterday and thinking it looked like far more fun than equivalent overpayments into a pension.

Has to be rent right now and then buy. We'd be happy to put most of our stuff in storage so accept somewhere smaller but I do 100 miles and up every week across all four of my bikes so not prepared to store them separately. A dinning room or second bedroom or garage. I'm in a 2 bed flat and fit my four in a spare room easily. Could possibly store the winter road bike now the season has changed to thin down by one.

Alex - why is your house not selling? I am sure I cycled past it when I was last over, is it opposite the allotments?

I know people who rent houses near there, they have never been empty.

Good luck with the sale, sorry for thread creep btw

Sorry for the hijack, but you never know.

Poolman, Yep, along from the allotments and just up from the nature reserve too.
Why isn't it selling? I have no idea.

It's a nice house, tell you friends!

Alex 🙂

I don't think the bikes are gong to be the problem, it's the dog unfortunately.
You could try not mentioning the dog but a bit of a risk obviously.
I am very keen to move myself, from south west Scotland to Norfolk (don't ride anymore and sick of the rain), and am going to buy a camper and spend some time there looking at properties.
I'd rather rent and then buy but it's difficult with a dog.
Anyhow, I do wish you the best of luck.

Nah not going to go down the route of lying. I’ve been in same situation twice now, first time a colleague at work had a flat and having met the dog was happy for us to stay and second time my parents have helped me buy my flat. We’re viewing something at 1pm today after his tour so you never know, it’s not ideal and is expensive but I think we need to get what we can having spoken to three agencies now.
