It would appear I don't give my self enough jobs on site and have decided to set this one out entirely too. Borrowed a topcon total station off a mate who's going on his usual 6 week summer jolly. He's loaded the dwg on to the handset and I'm working through modelling the site etc. However I don't have his lap top, just wondered if there were any free cad type programmes I could either load on to my Mac or ideally my Samsung site tab that I could just use to ping the odd unspecified coordinate or to interpolate any non given levels.

Not a cad monkey myself but have played about. I use qcad for 2d and solvespace for 3d. Both open source so fee versions to download.

Both should be good enough to draw a datum and take distance meassuments.

I think SOLIDWORKS do a fee program called draft site but not sure about its limitations.

Draftsight is great but I think its PC only. There's a few DWG viewers with sonme cad functionality for android to stick on your samsung so that can be done. AutoCAD have an app. I've used eDrawings and CADreader with moderate success

Mate, your brave. We leave the modelling to the experts, then just get the resultant files loaded up on a robotic total station.

I can give you a good contact to sort the modelling out if you like ?

I'm still using...

Engineers Site Manual 2nd Edition 1989/1990 WIMPEY.

The pass mark on the exams was 90%. But then again you couldn't just get it wrong in a shape or form.

I wish I had a Total Station when I did setting out 🙂

Perhaps I'm not modelling, it's not my thing so probably the wrong terminology. I've just selected the given points from the handset on say the carpark then formed a layer so I can walk round with the pogo and check levels etc. I could gladly get in to it especially free lance on £30/hr...
Mate uses draft sight, and rates it. No available download from the app store for the mac as such, can I use any old download off the internet?

Can't help. I'm a dumpy level and theodolite man myself.

Draftsight is available for macs, download from dassault website & free.
Take up the offer for a Leica TS16, great bit of kit, only £150 a week 😀 (better than Topcon and magnet software)

Draftsight is 2d. Points will have a z value though, but it won't make a surface.

Light the blue Square on a point and hover over it to check.

To interpolate any non given levels you need 3 D stuff, civils 3d, N4ce, LSS etc. Free cad things won't do it.

Ideally you need a 3d dxf in the instrument (with triangles) to do Dtm (digital terrain modelling) stuff, xml even better. Try loading the dwg? As a surface in the controller, that ought to work but topcon will only read DXF, you may need to convert it (Draftsight will do it and preserve 3d data even though it's essentially a 2d program)

If the controller is running Magnet, theres a way or loading a surface from a dxf. Xml works betted though.

Import, surface? Or exchange, from file, surface, something like that. If it's in already, it's stake, surface...

I'm assuming you wish to be able to tell what cut / fill to design you have wherever you walk.

Failing that, email us the file in dwg and I'll turn it into a surface for you, email back a dxf or xml. Let me know what version of software the controller is running too, magnet, topsurv etc. Hopefully not Carlson

Dtm, machine control etc is my game.

Topcon for the win BTW.

I've got the dwg in the handset running magnet so once I create the layers which I've done for the car park, access road etc I can ping any level wherever. Now got the grids for the sheds so just wanted to check coords for bolt centres etc. Will try the website for the draft site download. Thanks.
