Yup. What?
What help? I know a bit about buying print but I am not a print buyer (just bought lots in my time as a designer)
As johndoh, lots of experience of buying big print jobs.
I'm a printer so may be able to help also :p
What do you need to know?
What is it? flexo, litho, screen, gravure, digital, large format, etc. etc been in the trade for 'kin years...
His PC must've had a breakdown and is currently waiting an overpriced engineer to come and fix it 😀
I'm not a print specialist but used to work for one of the big print management companies so might be able to help, especially if it's pos.
Can also help if needed.
Been buyer for over 20 years
Thanks fellas, I've been 102 speedmaster minder for years and have had enough really, I have an opportunity to go into sales, I think I would be good as I have the gift of the gab and get on with everyone. The thing is I need to find out all about it, is is commissioned based, wages etc..also, how much free time do you get, seeing clients etc..do I need to put myself on a course? I just want to know about the general position really, what it's all about...any info would be great...cheers

Gift of the gab?
In sales you need to listen, not talk.
I was a printer when I first started working at 16 (just on a 52 in a little jobbing printers) I'm now 43 and have worked in sales since 92. I work for a very large print and marketing services company.
Johndoh is 100% right sales is very much about listening and understanding. You'll have the benefit of knowing your business which is useful, that's a good start. My advice is to go to some customer meetings with the sales people in your firm ( I assume it's an internal transfer), talk to them and understand what the job really is. If you are likeable and can handle rejection and disappointment well you'll be OK. Typically you'll earn a basic salary and then top that up with bonuses based on the profit from your sales. In print, as you know, margins are tight, it's very price competitive industry so you'll need to be able to articulate why a customer should use you when all other things are largely equal, that comes down to how well you build relationships and trust.
I love sales and won't/can't do anything else but it's not for everyone. I recruit based on Knowledge( you have that) Skill (you can learn/be taught that)and attitude (that's all you and where most people fail).
I have to say the phrase "the gift of the gab" is awful it's the opposite of what we do, never use it again!
That is great info thanks...I hate that term but another sales member said I had it, to me it just comes across as being cocky which I'm not.....thanks again
