Had a nasty bit of man flu/a cold for this last few days, generally feeling better now but have a lot of pain in my sinuses. Part of me thinks there’s not much point going to the quacks as they’ll just give me some decongestants, the other parts thinks that this really hurts and I want something stronger to stop it.

What do we reckon then? A waste of my and my doctors time? Or worth a visit?

Pop to your pharmacist first see what they can offer.

Give it 4 days or so, if no improvement then go to the doctors or ring the nhs ‘hotline’.

Best thing for sinuses is to get your face into a bowl of hot water with a good dollop of Vicks melted in it and a tea towel over your head.

2nd or if you have one or access to one of those facial steamers with or without vicks - apparently helps widen your tubes and reduces the chance of reinfection - not a doctor but that's what GP always told me to do

Do you pay tax to fund the NHS ? Are you in significant pain? Have you tried the chemists/NHS direct ? If yes to all 3 then contact your gp .

2 out of 3. I reckon I'll speak to the pharmacist over lunch and see what they suggest. The pain goes through waves, sometimes like hot pokers being pushed into my face, sometimes just a dull ache.

If it doesn't go away after trying the above stuff, it might be worth chatting to the quack.

My wife is plagued by sinus infections and has been reduced to tears with it in the past. Doc has often had to prescribe antibiotics to clear up the mess.

Pharmacist first.

I get significant sinus pain after most colds. I used to use Sinutab over the counter, but that seems less effective these days. Pharmacist advised a steroid based spray and that normally sorts me out in 24 hours ish.

If you do that and it does not help then see a GP

I sympathise; I had this for years on and off as a teenager.

Stop blowing your nose hard; you just push mucus up into the sinuses.

Take Ibuprofen, it's an anti-inflammatory.

Ask the pharmacist's advice, they often know more than your GP.

Flixonaise spray (or what ever the over the counter version is called) from the chemist. Steroid based spray that works wonders. I think the over the counter stuff is for allergies and hay fever, but it's all the same stuff. Couple of squirts a day and you'll be right as rain in a couple of days

This x100

Also laying in deep bath so the hot water comes over your head (but not your nose/mouth!) is very very soothing

Keep well hydrated, hot drinks are also soothing.

But really the steam breathing is the best

Buy some proper sudafed with pseudoephedrine in them. I suffer sinusitus, as do all the members of my mothers side of the family, for us these are the only drugs which work. The on-the-shelf sudafed as far as i'm concerned may as well be tic tacs for all the help they give.
