I'm after some advice. My mother in law has just bought a 1 bed flat. No gas supply so heating is electric night storage heaters and hot water is from by 120lt hot water tank on timer. So far so normal.
This would be fine but previous owners replaced the bath with old person friendly level access shower with chair etc. They have also installed a thermostatic electric shower. So this means that the 120lt tank is left supplying only hand wash basin and kitchen hot water tap, which seems crazily inefficient. Usage would just be normal, x2 persons showering once per day, washing up etc.
I'm thinking shower should be replaced with normal tank supplied shower ( but this may mean replacing wet wall if holes don't align) or tank should be replaced with a small thermostatic type boiler to supply sinks (something like this). Either way, she is on a budget so can't get too spendy. Any suggestions on best way forward?
Timer only needs to be on for an hour a day, if that. We used to have the same set up and it turned on 30 minutes in the morning, the same late afternoon.

I was looking at those little screwfix heaters. Would it not be easier thought to fit something similar in place of the tank as plumbing and power is already supplied to there?Â
Can you do some calcs and measurement to see how inefficient? If the tank is well lagged and set to a reasonable temp it might not use that much. Probably cheaper than ripping out what's there and fitting new stuff.

Good question. For the next couple of years they are using the flat as a holiday home so will only be there a few times a year, tank will obviously be off during those times, then on for a few weeks.
I guess the other consideration is storage, the tank is in the only proper store cupboard so removing it would free up a lot of useful space.
A small counter top dishwasher might be an option for washing up duty. Only heats the water it uses.
Schools experience only, but in those circumstances that could be regarded as a potential legionella breeding ground.
A real plumber will tell you more and destroy my argument 🙂
